I was given this knife in the early 90's by my aunts sister who was from Germany. It's kinda funny that she carried it in her purse on the plane when she came to visit her sister. But anyway I just want to know if anybody recognizes the tang stamp and can tell me anything about the maker.

The knife was made by Friedrich Hartkopf. They have been making knives for a long time, and are still producing. I believe they produce a large percentage of the German slipjoints.

Hmmmm… I think they may be a little confused. A Goole search on Hartkopf Messer will bring up lot's of info.

Probably are I know I stay confused. I just saw the same tang stamp and did not see any thing in Bernard Levine's book so I assumed and we all what that does.:D

This Serpentine knife is very common in German made knives. 'Every' Solingen knife manufacturer used this design of frame to make 2 and 3 blade pocket knives.

Yep,

this is what we call in German a “Herrenmesser“ (Gentleman's knife). This pattern is still produced by Hartkopf and other companies here in Germany. Don't know how long, but even my grandfather is carrying one of them.

Hartkopf apparently made knives for Hoffritz. Knifeswapper( Collector knives) ,posting in the other link indicated he had seen knives with both markings on the blades.

As Wolfe indicated ,it is Hartkopf's mark, doing business since 1890.
