I got around to ordering one of the German Surplus Rucksacks from Brigade Quartermasters and it came yesterday. I paid $14.99 for it, and had a free shipping coupon to boot. Mine was in excellent condition, and it only has a couple signs of use. If I didn't look hard, I may have guessed it only did warehouse duty. The padded shoulder straps are very comfortable, and the waist strap is a nice addition. However, it was a little more difficult to adjust than I expected, especially referring to the male clip. The rubberized lining on the compartments is nice, and I didn't expect the segregator on the main compartment. I saw a chain Sporting goods store charging double what I paid for them, so I'm glad that I waited and bought it from BGM. This is way better than the crap Wal-Mart charges up to $50 for. Also, I should mention that there is velcro strip along the flap, that could be used for attaching any number of things.

This is a great item for any outdoorsman, survivalist, and I would even recommend buying one for your kid to use as school book-bag (if their school hasn't went so sheeple as to ban non-plasticlear bags.

Mine was made in 06/01 (JUN 2001) by Schulze-Brakel.

Correct URL added. Shouldn't havee been working on two things at once!

Yeah, it's a pretty good sack. The divider in the main compartment is so the German sleep pad can be placed in the ruck up against the wearers back. I received one from a friend in Germany and they are strictly for keeping moisture away. They offer zero comfort.

I've tried using the waist belt, but I've found that carrying the load higher on the back is actually more comfortable for me, so I don't use the belt.

Hi MP510. I were looking for a pack so i could set up a Get Home Pack for my parents car. So i got one for 9.95 but didnt look very hard at it. It looked good so i got it. When i came home and realy checked it out i found that its a realy good pack. It is well build and build to last. It might not be the latest and the most comfortable pack to walk for hours. But it would do and it would last. Its big enough to carry what you might need but not too big that you would want to carry the kitchen sink. Next time i would go there im going to get my self a pack too. There might be better packs but this one is the best value for your money $10. I think Long Bow mentioned it to be 1,700. But it sure feels bigger.

Cabelas has new ones for $20 and list the size at 1700 in^3. They were $15 a couple years ago or so when I got mine. I like it for what it is: a tough cheap bag I don't have to baby. I don't know if I'd want to hike 100 miles with it but for short hauls or a bob it works just fine.

I fixed the link in my original post. Sorry, pasted incorrectly- I was working with another subject in another window at the same time.

Anyhow, I wouldn't splurge on a unissued one if they are all in the condition that I recieved.

While you are waiting , here is the full text of rucksack description as it appears on the Brigade web site.
"Experienced" German mountain rucksack is OD green and features a large interior measuring 14" x 9" x 17" deep. The top cinches closed with a drawstring and is covered by a flap, and secured by Fastex®-type hardware. An excellent daypack or bookbag, and at 2,100 cu in, good for overnights for those who pack light. You cannot beat this price on a heavy-duty ruck!

That's a really good pack. I really recommend getting the mat for the pocket, it makes the pack so much more comfortable to carry. I guess you could just cut an old mat for this purpose.
Beware, though, there are imported far-Eastern (?) copies being sold in many places. They tend to be cheaper, but I'm not sure they are as durable.
Ebay has a bunch of the real thing as well.

EDIT: Sorry, I just now checked the link. I meant this one:

Oops, my bad. The figure of 1700 was based on the listed dimentions where I bought the ruck. In all the years I've owned it, I never measured it.

Looks like it's actually closer to 2400 when adding the pockets in. I agree that the rucksack is much more comfortable with the pad in place.

Sounds really good longbow! I may or may not get a pad- we shall see in the coming future.

What would be a good search term if I was going to look for the pad on eBay?

I trimmed a closed-cell seat cushion to size.

Sasha,
I bought it here.
You can probably find it on ebay and a lot of other places by searching for "bundeswehr kampfrucksack". It's the best backpack for the money I've come across. Be sure to buy used (or gebraucht), as the new ones tend to be sub-standard imported junk.
