A guy asked me about a large ebony handled sodbuster he has. He wrote:

"Speaking of German steel I have this old folder marked Germany on one side of the blade and the letters and numbers on the other side, D.R.G.W 1423923 on the other. It looks like a Case Sodbuster but bigger. The blade is 4,3/4" 10,1/2" opened 5,1/2" closed. Handle looks like Ebony, it has a very strong spring."

Anyone have an idea who made it?

Joe

Photos are necessary for an ID. It should be DRGM 1423923, not DRGW. Might be Carl Schlieper. ...btw, Case got the idea from Germany.

I pulled up a copy of the patent using the search here: https://www.dpma.de/english/utility_models/search/

I have one too, and you can still read , and it is a Carl Schleiper as supratentorial posted. I thought the D.R.G.M. indicated pre-WWII thru WWII but read somewhere it was used up until 1953, so if it is the last one made it would be about 64 years old. John

Thanks a billion guys! Sorry for the late response. The guy who showed me pics of the knife is Ron LaClair. He's well known in traditional bowhunting circles and really likes the knife as a pack knife. Says it holds an edge well. I'll pass on the information to him.
