German tactical knives?

I've always wanted an authentic German tactical knife.
Like something the GSG-9 counter-terrorism use.

So is there a German tactical knife company?

There are Böker, Herbertz, Puma...

But except for Böker (a company that does not receive too much positive feedback - their liner locks are often heavily criticized) they produce few tactical knives.

I don´t know what the GSG-9 uses.

I personally wouldn´t buy German knives at the moment except for customs. The current production knives from Germany - in especially the tacticals - aren´t top notch IMO.

Thanks for the link Esav, didn´t know the GSG-9 tested this knife.

I personally wouldn´t buy an Orca. In a recent issue of a German knife magazine they showed that it didn´t hold up very well during a salt water spray test - I mean, it´s a diving knife after all...

But although it wasn´t designed as a regular tactical knife, it might do a good job in this category, although I´m sure what X 15 T.N. steel really is...it is supposed to be rust-resistant...

In an old issue of Tactical knife magazine it was claimed that the GSG-9 use the Glock field knife. Not sure if they still do.

Puma Lockbacks are about the only German knives I have had that resulted in a positive experience.

The Herbertz knives I have encountered seemed over priced for their quality which was a notch below Buck.

Boker made the Applegate/Fairbairn copies for a while which were pretty good knives at a reasonable price.

This knife may be worth considering:

Green Beret knife from CRK

While it's not German, it is authentic and made by a company with a reputation for very good knives.

Schtik, Tim,

there is some powerful engineering on tactical edges still remaining in Germany:

In another forum I read, that this company got recently the order of the US Marine Corps for their new bayonet.

I have never read about an issue knife for the GSG 9. I think they are more focussed on fireweapons.

Hello,
the German GSG 9 uses the Glock 81 field knife (which is not German but is produced in Austria). It is quite cheap over here (about 25 € = 24US$), carbon steel (RH 57) and very versatile - but it's not very beautiful as its ancestors seem to be bayonets...

Greetings from bavaria,
Andreas

Most all the knives I found on that site use 440A stainless. Not exactly great steel by today's standard.

I got a chance to handle that CRK Yarbourough this past weekend and it's a sweet knife. I've been looking at the One Piece line for a while but wanted better handle ergos. The Yarbourough seems to have it in spades. Chris said that it should be available to the general public soon.

Schtick,

according to the book "Taktische Einsatzmesser" by Dietmar Pohl, Stuttgart 2001, has the GSG-9 four different knives in stock:
- Bundeswehr Feldmesser
- Puma Auto Allzweckmesser
- Glock Feldmesser grün
- Glock Feldmesser schwarz

The "Feldmesser" was their first issue, but is now only as backup in stock. The Puma knife is of Bolo type and used by snipers for clearing firerange and by technical specialists for cutting demolition wires etc.

The Glock knife is not stainless so the troopers seem to like it not so much.

But the main problem is, that German policemen are in the grey zone if they use a knife. If the officer uses the knife as a tool, for example to prepare something or to free himself from a climbing rope, it´s o.k. But even breaking a door to reach a kidnapper could cause legal trouble. And the use of cold steel during the fight is strictly forbidden. Only as "last ditch weapon" for self defence it could be legal.

The author is marketing manager of Böker, Solingen, and claims to have good relations to special forces like KSK, GSG-9, SEK etc.

I bought this book last friday, so I didn´t know these things on my earlier post on this thread.

So a cop can't use his knife offensively in Germany!?!
That's crazy.

It doesn't sound like the greatest designers of firearms can design knives very well.

Most all German issue knives are made by Eickhorn. they arent exactly "top knotch". they are about the same level as our issue knives made by ontario, actually closer to the ones camillus makes (which use to have the contracts back in the 80s).

actually in defense of German cutlery they are capable of making good knives. Most of the ones exported are lower quality. When I was stationed in Germany you could buy some wonderfully made cutlery that you would not see anywhere else in the world. I know this to be true, I use to own alot of boker, linder, hubertus, herbertz, hirschkrone, puma, knives that were really good quality!!!

Like many american cutlery companies they've gone to the ford assembly line way of thinking. You can still howver get some nice cutlery there. the Only complaint I would personally have is I wish more steels were used other than 420.

@ Schtik:

Cops may use knives only as a last resort in a defensive situation.

As for German special forces the KSK uses Böker Applegate Fairbairn Knives in an all black version.
