Factory sale had them for $300, so I ordered one.

It's smaller than I expected, but it is quite nice. Holds my little knife collection with room to spare for watches & belt-buckles.

I like it.

Mike, I have two of their small machinists tool chests, acquired at yard sales. The quality is excellent, new - they're a little pricey, but as I'm sure you know-- they're a real pleasure to own. Enjoy yours. :)

I got a 2d on the walnut "treasure chest" during the sale. It came overnight and turned out to be very nice. Its quite a bit bigger than the collectors box, but it has a tall box in the middle that I'm not quite sure how to fill. It holds all my knives, plus all I'm likely to get in the near future, as well as a few odds and ends like the sharpmaker.
I'd sure save money if I didn't read threads from you guys. I'd never heard of Gerstner a couple of weeks ago!

What was "wrong" with your 2nd? I almost bought one of those in oak (2nd was the same price as 1st collectors chest) but I wasn't sure what to expect.

There was a small defect near a corner of one of the cross pieces. If you looked for it you could find it, but I was more than happy to take fifty bucks off for it.

Glad to see you guys are getting these quality Gerstner cases. I made the mistake of buying a cheap Chinese-made knockoff last year for $150 and I've regretted it since. The thing is falling apart already.

I have a Gerstner that was given to my father by a retiring friend of his. He worked in the Axle plant of Rockwell in New Castle PA and was given this chest by a guy who retired in the 1960's.

Best guess puts this cabinet's age at about 70 years old.

When I got it there was 1/4" of old grease and crud over 75% of the surface, the lining had all worn off and someone had tried to paint it woth gold automotive paint. :barf:

I put about 20 hours into restoring it, rebuilding some of the drawers and the front panel and have been using it for the past couple of years for storing my knives.

It's a beautiful old piece and as nice as the new ones they're making (IMO). I really like the fact that I know some of it's history and I feel confident it will be in my family for many more years.

I would reccomend the "real thing" to anyone who has the funds. It may be hard to pass on a Sebenza or Busse to buy a box, but worth every penny of it!

My Gerstner was given to me by my Dad. After 50 years,it needs a little cleaning, but is stil in great shape. They are an excellent home for your "finer" things.
