My first post here, found you guys from the Candlepower forum. Congrats on a lot of useful information.

I'm looking for a multitool which can provide a good grip on smooth tapered rivets, specifically those used on athletic gear like football helmets, baseball helmets or catchers gear.

The tool also needs the usual suspects: phillips #2, regular screw blade, knife blade. Ideally it also would have scissors, awl, and a file. A compact profile is also important, but not as important as the grip.

Most of the tools I see have a needle nose which is fine but is not necessary to my needs. The ones which have similar function to a vise grip plier seem interesting, but the grip would need to be fairly strong.

Any help is appreciated.

Gerber make a multi-tool that has exchageable plier heads. IIRC you can get a needle nose, blunt nose & shears for them. They are pretty old now so you may be able to get them for less than the current models.
