Get a Techno now, or wait for the Southard?

I'm not exactly in the situation where I can buy $200 knives all the time, but I can afford one once and a while. So, it's down to getting the Techno now, or waiting for the Southard a few months down the road. I really love the looks of both. The Southard is a few bucks more than the Techno, so that does play a role in my possible decision. If you had to buy one, which would you spring for?

I'm going for the Southard. Spyderco's first flipper; it's a monumental occasion! Plus you're getting more blade for your buck.

I guess the good thing is that both are production models, so I could, in theory get both. I think I'm leaning towards the Techno as of right now.

Well, the Techno is here, its here now and its cool. Yeah its too spendy. Its cool looking and that blue back spacer looks great. And you could be kidnapped by aliens by the time the Southard gets here, and what good does that do you? See, you never thought of that. And looking at the Southard, I bet that puppy is going to be some serious coinage.

I just like the look of the Techno, so I ordered one. I'll deal with the Southard when the time comes.

Yeah the Techno is a bit pricey for the size. The Southard is looking like it'll turn out around $250. I do love the looks of the Techno. I just gotta wait until the 204P Para 2 comes before I get a Techno.

Yeah, I have one of those suckers on pre-order too. But the Techno (probably) is not going anywhere, so you can snag one when the time is right.

I can't wait for the 204P Para 2. I love M390 and if 204P is Carpenter's version of M390 it should be a great steel for a great price. There's anticipation for both the 204P Para and the Techno for me. The Southard is still a ways off so I may be able to swing both.

Definitely the Southard flipper for me. By the way, does anyone know if the flipper is going to be given a model name? Or is it just going to be called the Spyderco Southard?

The techno is cool but no matter what, I will get one of those flippers. I say get the Techno now and hope the Southard isnt released until you have funds again. :D

Yep, the techno is a bit pricey, but I would rather pay the
coinage for a collaboration knife done right- and the techno
is one such knife. It's just a cool, little, stout, well built
tank of a slicer- for its blade thickness it came hair popping
sharp. It also breaks in fast and well.

By the time the Southard gets here you'll have time to save
up for it. That's what I'll be doing, anyhow. Good luck.

I'm more interested in the Southard. If I get my hands on it down the line and don't like it, the techno will probably be readily available at that point.

I'm not into the mismatched handle scale trend. I thought the flipper was tempting, but I much prefer the cleaner lines and symmetry of the techno.

I would go with the Spyderco Southard flipper. The techno had my eye for a while, and while waiting for its release I rediscovered my patience. So, I'll wait a bit longer for what I believe is a better all around knife. I hope Spyderco has put a steel insert on the Ti lock face like they did with the Ti military.

Just got my Techno!! Gotta tell you I was hesitant because of the smaller size and I have big mitts! But I decided to take the risk and ordered one. I love it!! It is really small but for some reason fits in my big hand. Its actually fun to flip open and close! Although the blue backspacer looks nice I agree with El Dude that I would prefer a ti spacer insert instead of the blue spacer. I just like the open look in general, not a backspacer fan. Its about the same size of the Leaf Storm i would guess. I did own a Leaf but sold it because it was too small and just didnt fit. But the Techno fits for some reason! So anyone that has bigger hands and is hesitant to order I highly recommend grabbin a Techno! And then grab a Southard when they re available!!

This thread read my mind....tear. The Techno just starting calling my name again. It seems solid, lots of blade edge for the size and no problems from what I've heard. A little perfect tank that you wouldn't mind beating up. The Southard, which I can't wait to get will be more of an EDC/gentleman type or tactical use knife. Even thought I hate that term. Which of us really ever gets mugged or attacked. Maybe by our cat or dog to play with us. ;) Is there a release date for the B.Southard? Thanks! Show some Techno pics guys!!

Alas, the Techno is going to have to wait now too. I got a smoking deal on a ZT 0560 and had to jump on it. Along with the soon to be released (hopefully) 204P Para 2, I'll not have much spare cash.
