get rid of the infuriating contrast / color

What does it say on it? Does it have a little x in the upper right corner? If so click on that.

What email program are you using? I bet it's Outlook (because that comes with Windows and you probably never tried anything else). If you download Thunderbird and use that instead that's a better email program and then you won't have to worry about how to get rid of that rectangle.
 
In places I was supposed to fill in,the monster blocked them & now I cannot go back to internet explorer for the same reason. What a foubar !

Uh oh. It sounds like you have a virus or some kind of malware. Is there anybody local who knows about computers and can help you? Ken C. could talk you through it; he is good at that, but I think it would be easier for you if you can just hand over your computer to somebody local and let him do it. Even if you have to pay somebody....
 
If you've already tried to use the "close X" on that window, Cougar may be right, you've picked up malware. Professional help will probably be your only recourse. If you haven't tried to use the "close X", try Alt-F4, which closes the active window without allowing access to the ram.
