I have this pocket knife made by Moore in matador, TX. I have had it for a little while know and would like to cleen it up. It has some rust on both blades, and inside the knife. The handles are held on with pins so I can't take them of easely. Can I put the whole knife in a rust remover? What is the best way to go about this? Thanks.

Use a single edge razor blade to scrape the surface rust then use progressively finer grades of sandpaper for polishing. You should be able to fold the sandpaper to get the inside of the handle.
Someone else may have more experience or a better way, this way worked for me with Hammerbrand Stockman inherited from my grandfather.

I personally would go with a sisal wheel and extra fast cut stainless steel compound. Besides which, buffing compounds can put a mirror finish on the blade, making rust less likely to occur with a smoother surface.

Don't have a clue how to clean the inside though.

Don't use rust remover-it can damage the steel.
You can scrape the heavy rust off with a copper penny. Then scrub the blade with 0000 steel wool. Then soak the blade down with WD 40 for a couple of days. Wipe WD 40 off, then oil.
To clean the inside use small pieces of the steel wool. You can scrub them around with a toothpick. WD 40 treatment.

IMHO, I like the nylon Scotch-Bright pads. They stay together better than steel wool and come in several grits. Just about any lube you want to use after you scrape the heavy rust off.

OK- a razor blade will scratch the steel. A penny won't.
Scotchbrite pads will scratch the steel. Steel wool won't.

:thumbdn: on the WD-40. WD=water displacing. You dont need that. :thumbup:on food grade mineral oil.--KV:D

How did it get so rusty? If you carry it in your pocket and you sweat alot you need to check it daily.

Kvaughn,
I restore knives professionally. How many have you done?

schotch brite pad and some wd-40 will do you just fine. after that some "bar keepers friend". its not a museum piece so let the patina age on it naturaly. it looks like a knife that i would be proud to carry as an edc. so my suggestion is to buff it down ,clean with b.k.f. & oil it up and carry it. if the knife has sentimental value please keep it away from power tools as it can be easy to "f" it up in a hurry.

did you look at the pictures of the blade, it is already schratched all over. im not discounting your expertice, but just bringing up a point that the blade was used and abused and put away wet. instead of just jumping on a member who was trying to help, how about trying to help us all out with a suggestion? thanx bro.

Yes, I looked at the picture. No sense making the condition worse. I offered suggestions that will not harm the knife.

Bill,

Do you use the edge of the penny, or have to file an edge on it? Sry to derail just curious.

Use the edge until it's rounded, then move to a new spot on the edge.
