Well, SubaruSTi seemed to think my Recluse looked too clean when I posted the below pic with the new lanyard I added...

The wife seemed to think it was completely wrong of me to make the first big pot of soup of the year without her a few weeks ago. So...with the chill in the air and the first of the autumn rains falling from the gray sky all Sunday, looking out the kitchen window and seeing the maples just starting to turn color, and watching the first of the falling leaves floating by on the breeze,..

I thought it a perfect time to put on another pot of soup. I started with a beef broth base and added some fresh tomatoes gifted to me from the project garden at my daughter's school.

Some very juicy farm fresh onion.

Fresh organic carrots, and the 5/32 is plenty slice-y for me, no carrot sections skittering across the counter.

Some potatoes, and yes, I cut the bad out before adding to the soup :) Unfortunately the corn, peas, Lima beans, and green beans were canned. It was somewhat impromptu (planned, but not for this particular day...), and with it being our first Sunday together settled in, I didn't want to leave to get fresh, and just went with what was in the pantry.

I had picked up a small hunk of sirloin just for soup though, so I thawed it out...mostly, it was still VERY well chilled while slicing.

Some additional herbs and spices...

A small pan of cornbread to go with it, and viola dinner is served.

And thus the patina begins :)

Yum!!

Ok - you have done it!

I am going to have soup later this week - thanks for the pictures!

Your knife is very nice - I personally love the way the carbon steels get that "oil in water" multi-colored patina. I think it comes from the potatoes and onions mostly.

looks like a mighty fine meal there mist

Thanks, it chilled the wife out some... I didn't really think about it, I've made soup all my life. But it seems that even when I have traveled for work, us eating the first pot of soup of the season together had become sort of a tradition for her... But she knows how much I like soup, fresh vegetables, and that the kitchen was going to be christened as soon as possible for me so now that she has some, she has forgiven me :)

:) Hey, it's the perfect time of year for it! Me too, I think you're right, and the garlic...not done yet with this one seems to add really dark spots and some purple...or maybe the purple is the shallots. I don't know for sure but more to come to get the blade well patina-ed before hunting season gets here :)

Once again mistwalker, great pictures. That makes me want to make some soup too. Fresh ingredients make all the difference. There is also a great deal of satisfaction in making it yourself in a world of fast food.

Thanks. I would much rather eat fresh foods and home cooking. I have had my fill of fast food. Back where we lived before little restaurants kept popping up all around us, but all of it was fast food, no real food to be found in the area unless you cooked it yourself. But I love cooking anyway, so I was fine with that. Much cheaper in the end anyway.

Yummy! Always a pleasure to combine an awesome knife with some good food...and a chilled beer too, of course.

Hungry again!

My apologies! :)

Yep, I love to cook so I love using my knives in the kitchen. Yep, next time I am in Grand Rapids I need to remember to pick up some decent beer.

fine looking meal! I wish I lived closer! Now that blades looking like a user!

Thanks! Lol, I have no idea how near or far..no idea where Blagoville is :). Oh, it's definitely a user, all my knives are, but I just sighted the scope on my squirrel riffle yesterday and picked up my hunting license. Next will be a trip to the range to sight in my deer rifle. I live just below the rifle/shotgun line so not going to sight it in here at home...I don't think :)

I love how natural the veggies look! looks like a well balanced meal!

I love having all of the orchards, produce stands, and Amish stores around. We got a late start this year, but we plan on taking advantage of them and doing a lot of canning next year....lol, if the world doesn't go to hell in a hand basket first...

blagoville was something i coined off of Rod Blagojevich but since he went to jail we have a new governer
