I,m test driving an Olympus Fe100 . It takes a pretty good picture and has some neat features . My computer a pentium 2 doesn,t appear to have the right receptacles for the connection between camera and computer . It requires U:S:B: receptacles . Am I sunk ? It also said it is better I have a pentium 3 which is proabably the reason I don,t have the right connections . All the software installed O:K: . I guess that doesn,t mean it will run well .

If there is no way for me to do this at home can I go to a computer copy center and have them transfer the images onto a floppy or C:D: ?

If you only need a USB port, it's easy to drop in a card. A copy center would be able to burn them to a CD for you as well.

Absolutely!

This should do exactly what you want. Follow directions enclosed with card. Just open the computer case and put it in an availaible slot.

There is nothing magic about this particular card. You should be able to find one like it at any local computer store. Now you know what to look for and the price range. If you have a notebook or laptop computer ask for

In either case find a cheap one, will work as well as expensive. The new USB tecnology is USB 2.0. The older stuff is USB 1.11. I'd go for a USB 2.0 like the above links.

Hey you technically minded gents. This is edited so read on if this solution doesn,t apply . Can,t I just buy an adapter cable between serial and U:S:B: ? Heck the cable supplied with the camera is way too short anyway . The only reason I can think of is with a longer cable it might introduce parasites . An adapter would only exacerbate that issue .

Its kinda borderline . I don,t use old puter for much more than text . (Up til now) The software coming with the camera includes audio with the video which would be a big plus for a couple of projects I have in mind . The computer is just on the brink of not having enough brainpower to handle everything . It needs a serious tune-up so at the same time I will discuss the feasability of the upgrade . Trouble is my puter friends are of the opinion ,more is better .(as are most techies) .
The thing I don,t understand is are not programs considered one user registered ? Will any puter programmed to handle an FE100 handle any FE100 ? I guess so if a copy center can help me . It makes logical sense . Sense doesn,t seem to have much to do with puters .(I know they are working on that one .)

If all you want to do is text, your P2 is still adequate. If you are serious about doing more with audio/video, you seriously should consider an upgrade. I don't know what your budget is, but you can get a very decent entry-level computer for under $800.00. If you're happy with your monitor, all the better. Check out Dell ; they have some pretty good deals right now. You don't have to spend tons of money to buy an adequate PC these days.

Honestly even my audio/visual will be so basic . Soubds of nature behind simple flute music . Cropping of Photos . Simple things like that .
Kronckew I,m not . Its the simple life for me . If I can get away with the pent 2 I,ll do it . The software did ask me to upgrade to explorer six . The last time I tried it was the crash of 06 . Ramifications are still being felt . I think if my puter was cleaned up before upgrading software it might work better .

Hi Kevin:

An alternative is to buy an internal drive that reads a number of different storage card types. I assume your digital camera stores it pictures on one of these little SD type storage cards. You could replace the floppt drive with it if you had to and read your pictures right off the little digital storage card.

Then you don't even need USB.

You are going to find that your PII will be inadequate for serious photo work.

I have a almost new box loaded with every piece of software you can think of. I will sell it cheap. PM me for specs if interested. You will be happy with it.

What OS are you running?

If you are asking what version of windows it is 98 . The Camera software said I should have at least . Explorer 6 to go along with this . I did install it at one time . I needed a higher bit encryption to go to some sites and the only way to get it was with an explorer upgrade . . It didn,t work out well . I think it was my fault as I may have asked the computer to do two tasks at the same time .
I am going to get a puter colonic and start from scratch . I will get a techie friend of mine to do the upgrade I have a few files of text that are proabably not where they are supposed to be . I have to save them and flush the rest .I wish there was a way to tell the computer to save everything I put in . Kind of a save all text command . I guess that will be right after I install the make beer now program . L:O:L

if you poke around on http://www.techbargains.com and look for the starting on wednesday Dell Deal of the Week... you can find a full new system for $400 or less often, much more computer than you have now, and more than adequate for most anything short of elite gaming.

you'll probably find, that the supplied photo software is MOSTLY crap, and it's better to hold off installing it - i installed the full suite that canon fave me, and i never used it. i just copied the card contents into my photos folder, organized the way i wanted. plenty of 3rd party programs (similar to iphoto (apple/osx) or adobes or ...) that work fine.

windows 98 is no longer really supported. a new box will come with XP and is magically better in many ways. so, if you're up on the photo thing, sell a few spare khukris and get a new dell :> install ALL the anti virus, firewall, etc stuff that you need (really), DO NOT use OUTLOOK, please avoid using EXPLORER at all. never. use the free and better mailer/browser from mozilla.com and you will be as safe as can be. hell, if you're going to setup to the intarweb, a hardware firewall from linksys or dlink is a good bet (powah and safety). go for it :>

Kevin?

I would seriously consider upgrading your computer. Microsoft doesn't even support 98 anymore, and consequently, there is less and less software being written out there that is backward compatible with that OS.

At BestBuy just this last weekend, I saw a whole bevy of HP desktops for under 700, all sporting AMD64 processors of various speeds and models, most with at least a gig of ram included.

Not a serious gaming or programming machine, but definately a platform that would serve most personal computing needs for many years to come.

My dos centavos.

I,ll have to throw in the U:S:B: cards . I just don,t have the computer chips to play the game . As long as there is no great cash outlay I am going to stay with what I have . If I find I am inconvenienced by my choice then I will upgrade . Its interesting to note that greater strides are taken in the gaming industry than other pursuits . Is that evident because of our communities preference for games or just a case of going where the money is ? I,ve talked with a guy who says a simple adapter cable from serial to U:S:B: will work fine . It will be slow . I am not in a hurry .

Part of the reason the gaming industry drives the PC industry is raw horsepower required to run the high-end games. Some gaming fanatics are paying $500.00 for high-end video cards to run these games. I like a good video game, but I'm not gonna pay 5 bills for a vid card. You can buy some nice sharpies for 5 bills.

If you can get by with the USB board upgrade, great. If it turns out that you have to do much more, your current PC isn't worth the investment. Good luck.
