My annual rite of summer is a hike at Turkey Point light house, in North East Maryland at Elk Neck state park. It is a beautiful spot, where the Chesapeake Bay, Susquehanna River and Elk River meet.

It is a small hike, for a big guy. I look forward to this every year. I've gone in the late spring and late fall before, and it's always a great hike. This past Saturday would have been perfect. Not too hot, not too cold, just right. My plan was to get there about 8, and afterwards get up to the new Cabelas in Delaware.

Well, got home from work Friday, sick with some malady, and slept from 6 in the evening through till about 6 the next morning. Man, was I pissed! I didn't show up there until about 1030 in the morning. And the lot was packed! There were two little old ladies in a car waiting for a spot, and I maneuvered my long bed Silverado backwards out of the area, and, mad at myself, went to Cabelas. I know that I will get back to the lighthouse trail sooner rather than later, but it's an annual rite. I'm thinking about leaving early Friday to get up there for a hike, I can't do it this weekend. It's about 90 today, but cooler weather is in the forecast.

Getcher butt up early!

I know that it is not easy for less than able bodied individuals to get active. But hats off for your spirit. I have degenerative arthritis in my three lower vertebra and almost zero cartilage between them. Most days the pain is tolerable and I am used to it for the most part, with some mild pain meds now and then. It is inhibiting however. I will never run or jog but I do walk many miles while metal detecting in and out of town. I actually lose weight in the non snow months here while pursuing this activity. So I understand reduced mobility issues and salute anyone in that position who still makes the effort to ''get out there''.
