Ok guys Im just gettin started and I just need to know some of the best places to buy steel for blades and knife making supplies. Also what are the main tools I need to get started. What do I need to make a knife. I just need to know the tools right now, easy on the green. I have doing a lot of research on knife making and I know some things. Just the begginer things. Thanks.

Read and search as much as you can stand on the subject. There are many different ways to answer, files, Harbor Freight, Sears, KMG, Bader, and many other grinder options. Steel is available from AKS and Aldo just to keep it short. Spend some time in the General Knifemaker Forum. Much more info available there. Read the stickies and then read them again, you missed something, trust me. Good luck and have fun. A lot to learn on here.
 
The Count(123456790)will provide you some links. LOTS of links. Read them all. It'll take you days. Several. Use the search engine. Almost any question you could ask in starting has been asked. In fact the exact same one you asked has been asked and answered just about weekly. :D:D Welcome, and I hope you enjoy making knives as much as I do.

These are clear, well organized, widely available and inexpensive too.

Knife Design:

Think thin. A paring knife slices, an axe splits.
Forget swords, Saw-tooth spines, guthooks, crazy grinds and folders for your first knife.

Start with a drawing.
Then make a cardboard cutout template & draw in handles, pins and such
Then make it in wood, paint sticks are free & close to the right size.
Play with that and see if it “feels right”. If it feels right it usually “looks right“

The $50 knife Shop
It confused me for a long time.
Forging is NOT necessary; you can just file and grind to create a knife (stock removal)

Forget the Goop Quenchl.
Use commercial quench oil & match oil speed to the steel type; even grocery store canola oil works much better.

Junkyard steels require skill and experience to identify the steel and heat treat it properly.
You can buy proper steel like 1084FG from Aldo very cheaply.

I like cable damascus, but that advanced project has no place in a beginner’s book.

The grinders are the best thing about this book, but there is a huge amount of info for 2x72” belt grinders on the web, including free plans.

Forget about Lawnmower blades and start with a new known steel type.
Good heat treating needs accurate temperature control and full quench.

Steel
The “welding steel” at Home Depot / Lowes… is useless for knives.

If you send out for heat treating, you can use
Oil quenched O1, A2,
Or air quenched D2, CM154, ATS34, CPM154, 440C, plus many others.

If you want to heat treat yourself with minimal equipment, find some Eutectoid steel.
1084FG sold by Aldo Bruno is formulated for Knifemaking, Cheapest & made for DIY heat-treat.

1095 is a good carbon steel, but a bad choice for a beginner with limited equipment.

Safety Equipment
Protect your -Eyes, Ears, Fingers, and Lungs – remove jewellery and put on safety gear.

Respirators
Chronic lung disease and cancer really suck the joy out of life.
The minimum I would consider are the 3M 7500 and North 7700 silicone half masks with a P100 Filter.
Use a VOC & P100 combo cartridge for protection against acetone and solvents.

If you're on a tight budget. There's some sweet file kits Bladsmith put up for sale in the knifemaker's market. You can make knives with files with a vise(I hear) or a budget 2"x42" craftsman grinder can be used. The best investment is a few gallons of gas to drive to a knifemaker in your area and learn from them. :-)
For steel. Aldo Bruno. The New Jersey Steel Baron. Google him. Get some 1084 from him.
 
Welcome to the Bladeforums.

The sticky about "how to instructions for making a knife" is a good start, and deals with setting up and tools required for your first endeavor. The suggestion about knifekits.com is also a good way to get your toes wet.

The file kits mentioned have a lot of good stuff in them, but the files are more for finishing than doing simple bevels. You will still need a 10-12" flat bastard and a 10-12" second cut file if you get one.

Posting your sketches and ideas here is always a good way to get critique and advise, there are a lot of great guys (and gals ) here that are willing to share ideas and sources.

Aldo Bruno is a great seller of knife steel. One of his many attributes ( Aldo- attributes is a good word) is that the steel he carries is all good for knife work. Good first knife steel is 1084FG for a forged blade or one you plan on heat treating yourself, and CPM-154 for almost any stainless steel blade. CPM-S35VN is a good stainless steel for kitchen and slicer blades.
