I used grip tape for toy skateboards. I got off of that popular auction site. It was $1.99 I believe for a 1.5x5" piece

If you want colored grip tape hit your local marine supply. They usually have blue, green, red and maybe a few other colors. Last time I bought some it was sold by the foot.

Yeah it stays on very good. It hasn't moved at all and it gives great grip. It will eat up your pockets tho and when you first put it on its hard on the fingers, but it will smooth out to a comfortable finish but still be rough enough to give you serious grip

If you want to avoid that "hard on the fingers" feel, take the grip tape and cut it in half. Put the two sheets facing each other (gritty side to gritty side) and rub them around a bit. Trust me. It won't remove all the grit and your fingers will thank you for it.

I used to skateboard a lot. When you first put grip tape on a board it will chew up your fingers and your shoes for a few days. I found that it you rub it with some other grip tape you have laying around it's not near as bad - and it still has plenty of grip!

I had the same problem with my Leek. I did a acid stone wash and it made the grip a little better.I can't seem to find a solo pic of it bit I am sure you can figure out which one it is.Also, if you do go with the grip tape. I'm sure if you went to your local skateboard shop they would gladly give you enough scraps to do many knives.

Do you have access to a sandblaster? A course sandblast session on the scales will rough them up - not a rough as skate tape though.
