Getting a Grip

I picked up a Spyderco Police recently and I. Dig. This. Knife.

However, I am concerned about the grip. The full stainless model I acquired is super slick and the knife is intended to be carried off hand for weapon retention at work. I like the heft of the knife, so I'm not interested in swapping for a G-10 model.

Has anyone added grip tape/jimping/knurls or anything else to improve the grip on this knife?

Sorry if it's been asked before...I'm sure it has.

Also, what kind of trouble is it to remove the "Police" marking from it?

Plenty of people have added skateboard tape to their SS Spydies. I've seen people cut jumping along the edges of the handles and I've seen handles with extensive engraving that was far more attractive and at least as effective (but much more expensive).

As far as removing the "Police" marking, if you don't mind a big ugly grind mark on your blade, it's not too difficult.

Can the scales of the SS models be bead blasted with (somewhat) large media to add some texture? Has anyone done this?

Thanks. I was thinking about finding some handgun grip tape. This is a user, so I didn't really want to "outsource" changing the grip. Although, I guess a good vise and my Dremel could make some decent cuts.

As far as the logo, I thought it could just be polished off. Is that not the case?

Oh definitely.
Tape up the blade well so it doesn't get blasted and more importantly so no one gets cut and take it to a place that sand blasts head stones (engraves them). They use a coarse blasting media.
PS: you might wedge some dense cardboard or thin wood door frame shim into the blade slot to help keep the grit out of there.

Instead of skate board tape (which is really rough) get some gun grip tape. I can't remember the brand name but it's sold online and is a rubberized self adhesive tape that works well for grip but it's harsh on the skin.

You will have better grip and still have soft, gentle hands.

The old ones are deeply stamped, the new ones are laser etched. Simply polishing won't do it, you'll have to remove some steel.

I put 'GT-5000 Grip Tape' on my Spyderco Police. I was having trouble with the handle slipping out of my hand when I deployed the blade. Switching the pocket clip helped the most, though. I'M not sure if any modification will make a SS knife safe enough to thrust with. I dremmeled jimping on an old Endura. It seems to work (I haven't stabbed anyone yet:eek:), but it is ruined for resale......ugly, lol.

What about some simple low grit sandpaper to add a bit more texture to the scales themselves? I personally would not do that my knives, but my day to day cutting duties aren't too extreme, and the extent of my Kung Fu is "Hi-Ya!" and a karate chop.

I roughed up one side of my SS Police with sandpaper and then put skateboard tape on which I cut to shape. Works great but I do worry about pocket wear, even though the side with the tape is facing the interior of the pocket.
