My father has a VERY old benchmade lockback and the rubberized handle has literally melted away... given this forum seems to do a lot of customizing.. can someone point me in the direction of a company or member who might be able to remake the handle out of a new material? Would make a great b-day present for him.. Mods move this if it should be in the Maintenance or Custom forums..

it may help to have the model of the knife and if possible some pictures too.

Phillip Dobson is a member on here and has been know to do a custom handle or two. It would help know the model though.

+1 on Phil. His work is great and fast. He placed a handle on my Rat Izula and I couldn't be happier.

Nice Rat!

Many of the makers in the Makers forums could do a good job on rehandling, but the problem is finding one who'll take a break from making knives to take on mod work. Can't hurt to ask though.

I'm not sure what model it is, I can't find anything on it that defines what it is - aside from having Benchmade on the blade... has the benchmade logo on the side with bali-song written inside the butterfly rather than benchmade... It might even be a fake - he said it was a gift about ~15 years ago..

Will get pics - I have no digital camera..

+1 on Phillip Dobson, especially if you are looking for wood scales. Phillip keeps some really nice stuff in stock. If you need some G10. feel free to contact me. I can send you some for free (consider it my BD gift to your dad). I have several colors. Phillip probably still has some of the smurf blue I sent him a while back, if that is your cup 'o tea. You can feel free to use some of that if you go with him.

Would I just cut the G10 to fit? then sand and paint? I am a big do-it-youself/tinkering kinda guy, but never done anything with knives before.. I know my father would prefer a rubber or g10 handle- he uses this knife to clean deer with, doesn't like slippery handles... he is not the kind to "collect" anything, he will use it as a tool... It is very kind of you to offer it, if it is something I think I could work with, I would not accept it for free, but gladly pay whatever cost + shipping is.

Edit: I think because of the handle design it would be very difficult (without fabricating some parts on my own) to make a proper handle, I will take pictures ASAP... and if I can't do it, I'll contact Phillip Dobson as you recommended.

Be careful with G10. You don't want to breathe that stuff.

I do indeed have your "smurf blue" G10, along with a bunch of other nice stuff (if you aren't a Smurf fan).

Photos go a long way toward determining feasibility of a particular re-handle job.
