Getting a mirror edge

So regarding sharpening, I used a DMT kit with 4 stones from coarse down to ultra fine. I have the 8 micron (finest) stone. Together the kit works well. However, I can't get that mirror edge on my knives. Should I add stropping to the process or what?

Thanks

You are going to need to move down to 1 micron, preferably less, to really get a mirror edge. DMT has a set of 6/3/1 micron diamond pastes if you wanted to go the strop route.

After your 8 micron stone, I would recommend that you strop down to 3 micron then 0.5 micron (either diamond paste or the green chromium oxide), you will get a very nice mirror finish. This will also make a finer edge that you should notice.

Good luck,

I was thinking of picking up a field strop made by Flexxx. Anyone used those? Do they come with pastes? The pastes usually last a good amount of time right?

DMT also has a 3 micron/8,000 grit stone too.

But like said above, you are going to have to strop with compounds to truly get a mirror edge finish.

I have the finest stone DMT offers. I think I just got the grit mixed up. I will pick up those compounds and a strop.

yep you got it mixed.

the DMTs you have are : 45, 25, 9 and 3 microns.

after the EEF, assuming you removed all previous scratch patterns, 1micron diamond compound on a hard surface will bring a lot of shine to your bevels. a perfect mirror, probably not, but very close. and a smoother yet still aggressive edge too.
