Getting a new knife!!

Hello all, just came into a bit of money for my upcoming birthday and I'd like to buy a new knife. As some background, I've loved knifes ever since I was really young (not to say I'm old) and I've just recently been able to start building up a collection which currently consists of a Kershaw Tactical Blur, Buck Adrenaline, and an AKC Stiletto 9" (Olivewood/Bayonet). Anyway, on to the knife I'd like to buy. I'm looking for something as a daily carry, so nothing fully auto (keep the stiletto at home). At the moment I'm leaning towards an Emerson of some kind, like the CQC Waved-8. I'd like the knife to be one hand openning. I'm not a huge fan of Tanto blades, but if the knife is nice enough I'm certainly willing to buy one. The same goes for serrations, not the biggest fan and a plain edge is definitely preferable. I've heard fantastic things about Benchmade's, and I know Kershaw is great for the price. I'd like to spend less than $200, but again, if the knife is nice enough, I've got the money to spend. Thanks in advance!

PS. Regarding Benchmade, what's the deal with the different color classes?

Welcome to Bladeforums!

So how big a blade do you want to carry day-in and day-out?

What types of chores are you going to do with your EDC?

Where are you going to EDC? Urban environment? In a business? White collar? Blue collar?

See Benchmade's definition of its classes here:

Most any knife (especially the Benchmade Axis knives) made by BM, Emerson, etc will be "one-handed" openers. While the Emerson "waves" are tempting (and maybe they're nice, Idont know), you don;t need anything fancy at all.... just a good, solid, thumbstud knife. I have an old BM-Emerson 975 (which is now the Emerson CQC Super 7). It's one of the smoothest opening knives I've handled in the last 10 years (except for the BM Axis blades). I can flick it open with my thumb as fast as any auto and still retain more control of the knife.

As knarfeng alluded to, you didn;t give us much to go on and when that's the case, I always say "Get a Benchmade". You want big and thick? Rukus and Presidio. Big and thin titantium? Skirmish. Super stylish? Oppurtunist and Apparition. Low-priced but still BM quality? Griptilian Axis lock. Old-school and never out of style? 907, 910. Small to medium? MINI-Rukus, -Presidio, -Griptilian, etc etc

Sorry about the lack of info, and thank you for the warm welcome. I'll be using it to cut down a few cardboard boxes and occasionaly slice through some thin plastic. So the workload is not very heavy at all (the boxes are usually thinner cardboard). As far as blade length goes, 3-4 inches most likely. I live in a suburb, so I suppose that's an urban environment.

If you lke bigger blades for EDC like i do, I would look into the Benchmade Rukus. I'd love one, but in my line of work kinves dont last a long time. So i'm sticking with my $30 ish CRKT Cruiser.

Spyderco:
Endura or Delica Wave
Military
Manix
Caly 3
Yojimbo
Maybe a good fixed blade? Street Beat

Benchmade:
Rukus or Mini Rukus
Skirmish or Mini Skirmish
HK34 (Model# 14200)
710
550, 551, 552
Maybe a bali? Morpho, 42

I'm going to have a similar budget for my next blade and I'm almost 100% that I'm going with the Spyderco CF BG-42 Military. If I wasn't getting that I would probably go for the Mini Rukus.

Also look at the Benchmade 707. 3" Blade of 154CM steel, axis lock, aluminum handles with G10 inlays. Nice blade shape also.

I find a 3" blade is pretty optimum for EDC. It's big enough to handle any chore, but not so big as to scare people when you pull it out to use it.

I think you'd be happy with any of the blades that have been suggested.

I'll be EDCing a Military soon- 4" blade, 5.5" Handle:eek: . What can I say? I likes the big knives:) .

I just got a CRKT Crawford Falcon and it is a very nice EDC. It has a good heft, textured Zytel handle, a 3 3/4 inch blade of tough AUS6M steel and is razor sharp...The 2 best features are it has a liner lock AND LAWKS safety lock with makes it virtually a fixed blade....and it's only 50 bucks...Google it and take a look...not bad for the money.

With his budget he can do better than an AUS6 blade. Heck, I don't carry AUS6 and I got considerably less than his budget.

Ignoramus, I hear you. I carry a 3 1/2" blade when I work around the house on weekends because I can. But I've got a couple of 3" blades that I carry during the week when I'm around the blade challenged.

Thanks so much for all the great suggestions, I'll be looking into each knife today and hopefully will come to a decision.

Just wanted to add that the Rukus and/or Mini-Rukus are great knives and some of the best examples of the Axis lock by BM.

I realize AUS6M is just a step above a tin can lid (Iv'e got some ATS-34 and D2 Blades, no INFI yet but when tax refund comes look out...LOL) But Iv'e had this knife for a couple weeks and open up a bunch of boxes and cut rubber and ty-raps and it seems to be holding up well.....There is a lot of blade here...and for 50 bucks if it sucked I could throw it in the dumpster and not be heartbroken. Iv'e had some high end knives that sucked and low end knives that performed admirably....Iv'e had a Case Trapper for about 40 years and even though it's been thru hell it still cuts....I think sometimes you just get the luck of the draw. I think sometimes I get the knives made after Super Bowl weekend when everyones still drunk or has hangovers...LOL :D

i have the opportunist, nice piece also

I carry a BM Rukus. My envirnment allows me to carry a large folder, Although people do take notice when I pull it out. The mini Rukus seemed just as solid to me, But I like the larger blade.
