Getting a satin finish

What grit would be good for getting a satin finish. Not looking to polish, just get a nice even finish after the forging and HT. Thanks

320 or 400 is the usual.

I like to sand to 800 or 1000 grit, then use 600 or 400 for the satin finish on.
