I know this is a hugely varying subject. I have contacted Atlanta virtual about creating a web-site, but I'd like to hear what you guys have to say about it.

I know many of you created your own. At 22, I'm supposed to be in the whiz-bang generation that knows the in's and out's of computers...but I don't have a clue on where to even start.

Any help or tips, anything, what to do, what NOT to do...would really be appreciated.

Thank you!
Nick

Alex at Atlanta Virtual will do you right. If you don't mind those irritating banners too much you can make your own for free. Go to my home page to see what I have made out of free pages. There's a link at the bottom of my homepage to expage too. It's easy.

My page was free, and I did it before I learned any html. My first suggestion is get an FTP program and read its help file. CoffeeCup directftp is a good one.

I agree Alex will do you right. If you want to try something really easy, and you have access to microsoft Word, the program has a wizard to help you design a web page. It is amazingly easy requiring no skill and only a little imagination.

As for somewhere to put it when it's done, there are free places but they all have that annoying advertising that your visitors are subjected to. They may be OK to see how it will work but don't put too much into promoting the site because you won't be happy with it for long.

Many internet service providers include free web space with their dial-up accounts. If you have this, you may as well use it. No advertising to worry about and at least a limited support service. Go ahead and promote that site if you feel your relationship with your ISP is fairly stable.

Eventually, you will want your own domain. Not only does it look more professional but it has all important portability. If you use the free web space from your ISP your address would be something like www.aol.com/knifedude/

That is fine unless you get unhappy with AOL or get a better deal somewhere else. All the search engines, page links, brochures, business cards etc still point to your AOL site - which now says 'no such user'.

With your own domain, you would be at www.knifedude.com (or whatever) and you can carry that with you nomatter who hosts your domain. The address is yours and all your promotional work is secure nomatter where you go.

Enjoy - whichever route you choose.

Rob!

Wow, you explained a lot there. That cleared up quite a few things I've had floating around in my head. Thank you!

As far as Atlanta Virtual, Alex has already emailed me a few times being very careful to explain everything and has been one of the friendliest internet based relationships I've ever tried to start.

It's only time and money right?

Thanks guys,

Nick, I know you said web-site, and you've gotten some good advice, however if you're just looking for a way to show off you work and be able to post pics here, you may just want to setup a PhotoPoint site for now. It's fast, it's easy and it's FREE!
There are several folks here that have web-sites that also use PhotoPoint, probably because it's so easy to change the pics when you need to.
If you don't have a PhotoPoint site now that's where I would start?
You can click on my link below and click on Setup PhotoPoint Account. If you have some pics in a .JPG format you can have it up and running in less than an a half hour, just follow the instructions.

If you just want something simple to say "Hey, I have a web site", then do it yourself, but if you have no experience, it will look like a cookie cutter template site at best, and extemely cheesy at worst. If you plan on making money from your web site by using it as a tool to sell yourself (very inportant) and your knives, get it professionally done. You might spend x dollars to get a site from Alex at AV, but your return will be xx dollars.

Oh, by the way, S.R. Johnson, Ricardo Velarde, Reese Weiland, Neil Blackwood, Michael J. Smith, Koval Knives, Frank Dilluvio, Buster & Julie Warenski (coming up)...the dogman doesn't do too shabby of a site either
