Getting addicated for sharpening

Hello everyone!

I am avid knife nut (well, most of us are) but I've used sharpening with cheap set of Lansky ceramic crock sticks and with small and big arkansas stone free hand. Now I can get almost any knife working sharp and shaving sharp but I suck reprofiling.

I got access Lanskys Deluxe set last Friday and in past 4 days I've been used that to reprofile some of my knives that desperately needed reprofiling. Now I got 4 knives that has semi-mirror edge. It easily reflect letters and images but they're not as perfect mirror shiny as I've seen someone do with Edge-pro.

But I spent in last 4 days about 12 hours together sharpening and reprofiling my knives and then stroping them green compound. With near mirror edge and reprofiled some of my knives have got scary sharp but after spending 4+ hours of reprofiling Queen's Dan Burke Small Barlow's both D2 blades with stones, I realized I need diamond hones too.

I'm planning to get diamon stone for lansky, extra fine polishing stone, arkansas stone and stones for the combo edge or full SpyderEdge knives (I don't yet have full Spyder edge knives but I am planning to get one).

I got still very surprised what I could do with 5 lansky stones and strap with green compound. Now I actually got even bevels on my BM 930 Kulgera with smooth looking aswell. It was horrible looking out of box with sides uneven compeared to each other an d bevel looking like someone sharpened it with chainsaw. Now it looks like its $170 knife from Bevels aswell! Now I am planning to improve my skills to make perfect mirror edge one of the my knife... I think I am starting to get addicated for the sharpening and reprofiling now that I have tools and I know what I can do with them... and I know what I am missing :D

I just need to find out what is difference between black and white hard arkansas stones for lansky and for other minor details. I got 60+ knives... I think I am spending quite alot time near future of sharpening my knives and reprofiling those which need it.

Good for you. That should save you some money in buying knives. You'll be too busy reprofiling and sharpening to buy more knives (for awhile)! :D

Congratulations on your success. (And on your patience:p )

If you have indeed become a victim of the "curse" (shiny blade addiction) you may well be properly served by setting aside a portion of your disposable income for an Edge-Pro.

You should also be made aware that this addiction is progressive! :D:p:D

I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. Addicted to sharpening? That's just NUTS!! :p

Your newly-found 'epiphany' closely mirrors my experience. I also was 'enlightened' by way of the Lansky set. Went through every knife I could get hold of, once I figured out I could actually put an excellent edge on a knife with it. It's a very effective learning tool, if you pay close attention to why it works as well as it does. Learned a lot about angle control, pressure regulation and PATIENCE (most important of all, regardless of the tool of choice).

As has been noted, this should save you some money on new knives. I'd accumulated a lot of 'em prior to learning how to 'properly' sharpen. Once that was out the way, my energies have been re-directed in a big, addictive, OBSESSIVE way. :D

Congrats to you!!

I will post later some pictures how I am getting closer to mirror edge. Currently I am at the best: Very smooth and shiny edge but not mirror yet... Happy days... I just put order Sapphire superfine polishing stone for my lansky set :D

Yep! You're a victim of the "curse."

forever will it rule your destiny. Yoda)

Talk about addicated? I spent 1/2 the day yesterday getting the cloudiness out of my blade (another thread) and when it was mirror enough for me I decided to put a 40* micro-bevel on it and somehow dulled the whole damn thing. I mean paper tearing dull. :grumpy:

I just spent 4 hrs re-profiling it again to 36* inclusive. If anyone here has ever re-profiled Duratech 20CV the you'd know what a BEAR that stuff is - man that's some double tough steel!!
