Getting another forge together...questions

Hey, All...WHEW!!! It's been a minute since I've done much else around here than post off in W&C, but at last, I'm getting another forge together! I've got an old propane tank for the shell, I've got my Kaowool and ITC-100, and I've still got my old T-Rex from the "Hellmouth" that I built, before.

The two questions I have, that I haven't seen addressed by anyone, anywhere, are these:

1) What's the rule on working ITC-100? Days are anywhere from 40s to 70s, with nights dropping anywhere from the teens to 40s. Gotta love North Texas winters, huh? I'm just worried if I brush my ITC-100 on during the day, will it affect it if it freezes, overnight? How long would I want to let it dry before I fire it?

2) Currently, I only have one opening, in the front...do I NEED an opening in the rear of the forge? I see various folks have put one in, but they always state that it's so that longer pieces can be forged. I figure, I'm trying to maximise my heat, so I wasn't going to put a rear vent. Then I started thinking about my last forge, which would shoot fire two feet out the front of it. I dunno if that was because of the lack of a rear vent, or the fact that I had the burner kicked somewhat forward?

Anyone have any thoughts on these issues? Also, lol...anyone got an 100+ pound anvil they'd let go, anywhere within, say 50-75 miles of Wichita Falls? Been looking, but none at farm sales or flea markets to be had :( .

Thanks in advance, as usual!

I'm not a forge builder but will give it a shot. As far as the rear vent goes there is no absolute need for one(as long as you never want to work a piece longer than the forge). I would be tempted to put one in though and close it off when not needed.

If you are getting that much unburned gas coming out of your present forge door then probably you need to lean the mix. 4-6" of flame out the door is plenty.

I've always waited for it to dry for at least two days, then fired low for a while, then ramped it up. It's hard to wait.

I was pretty sure I've heard of guys doing it quicker than that, and apparently this is done. The first link is dealer's instructions, (wait) and the second link is quenchcrack's method (fire wet.) I don't know about Ron Reil, he may have something to say about it here. http://ronreil.abana.org/sitemap.html
