I wanted to show you guys how far I have come since my first botched sheath thread.

Looks professional. Do you simply cut to shape for tension fit or have you done any wet molding? I've been looking at methods online and I just wondered what you prefered.

I would highly suggest Paul long's DVDs. I use his method for making my patterns and cutting out. It's a tension fit. Due to the shape and skiveing.

No wet molding or any of that.

Paul's DVD, chatting with Paul on the phone and email, talking to Dwayne and KT helped me out a lot

Great job! I had to look twice, because I thought it was one of mine. Looks like you got a Wayne Jueschke stamp as well.

Paul

Edited to add photo: I just finished this sheath literally a few minutes ago just before I read this thread. Notice any similarity?

(Great minds think alike;))

Yeah!!! It is my favorite stamp. I only own a couple stamps, 4 to be exact. It works the best compared to my Tandy stamps.

Wow. I still think your sheath is way above mine. Like I said I purchased your DVDs and have talked to you on the phone and over email trying to figure stuff out when it comes to tools and some processes. So I thank you. I did mention you and thanked you over in the Knifedogs sheath thread because you did help out when I first posted my first sheath that was totally botched.

Weatherman, the very biggest compliment you could possibly give any of us you think helped you is to show proof as you did in post #1. You get to run with the big boys now, my friend.

Paul

Wow you guys who make beautiful sheaths with complicated stampings etc just blow me away , I'm still struggling to get a plain sheath right :)
very nice sheath

Ken

When I get home to a computer I will post some pics of old sheaths. It take time and lots of practice and help from the guys like Paul, Dwayne and KT

Weatherman - for kicks - post that first botched sheath and this one side by side.

When Paul says you are ready to run with the big kids - you are ready.

TF

Ok here are some pictures to show some progression. I made three sheaths before I started to post about leatherwork and a botched sheath.

First pic is one of my first sheaths. No tooling, I did try lining it. I used glue, no stitching at all. And I still like lace but it really hurts my hands because I pull on it tight. Everything I do is by hand even the stitching to the sheaths I do now.

So I started see what a real sheath looked like so I tried and this is the botched sheath. I only have this pic of it.

I was so angry with my self I trashed it and it turned something like this I can't find the photo of it... Just no tooling drilled holes and lacing through the holes.

Then I got a hold of Paul's DVDs after getting frustrated with not being able to see or understand why I couldn't make what I wanted. The tooling needed work, I still was not happy with all aspects of what it was...

Then I ended up making some more.

And then I did lots of searching and thinking and figuring out how to get hand stitching to look like it was done with a machine.

Very nice show of progression dude. I really like that stamp. Where did you get it - or what's the part number?

Bonafide - it is a Wayne Jueschke stamp. At one point I was looking for stamps. Paul Long said something about looking at Wayne's stamps and I called and talked to him about them. I ended up with that stamp and a basket stamp. I am sorry I don't know what number it is. I lost his little booklet you can ask him for that has his stamp numbers on it. When I talked to him he didn't even have it in his book. It is one of his Geometric Stamps

Let me know if you would like his number.

Hand Stitched??? Now I'm even MORE impressed. Save your pennies for a good Cobra 4 stitcher, and then a Cobra 18 for the finer and inlay work.

Paul

Yeah. Everything is hand stitched. I use #69 for the small stuff like the lining with 7 stitches per inch and then #346 on the welt with 5 stitches per inch with a "00" harness needle. "drill" all my holes with a sharp awl needle ( suggested by Paul Long ) worked great.

I would buy leather tools but I like making knives and I don't have any big boy toys for knife making yet. Just files and a small 2 x 42" grinder. Small baby steps.

I spent all my saving money that I was allowed to spend on a heat treat oven so I am saving for a grinder etc.

Really impressive progression:thumbup:

I'm still working on my first...one step forward, two steps back:rolleyes:

Weatherman - could you post a pic of the back of your sheath? My stitching is getting better, but the back looks so rough compared to the front.

Think I'll have to sneak a copy of Paul's DVD onto my next order of knife supplies...

Oh man! I wish you asked last night. I have that knife and sheath to my friend. However I do have another sheath that I stitched. The stitches on the back are not recessed. I didn't cut a groove
