Today was a typical Vancouver Island day, cool but not cold, very misty, fine rain and very, very wet !!!!

Decided to try out the little bottle of sanitizer that lives in my glove box....

The steady drizzle of rain hit the tinder as I repeatedly struck the ferro rod....wasn't looking good !

The suddenly......

The terror was her usual crazy self, chasing round with every dog she saw and climbing into and on top of everything looking for birds and other critters !

Maisy just watches her in disgust, wishing it was just the two of us again !!!

I've had luck with hand sanitizer too. It's a great option to have in your kit!

Handy stuff to have. Coupled with some cotton wool from the FAK, gives another useful emergency lighting option.

PitDog,

Have you ever tried the hand sanitizer without fatwood? By the way, which took the spark? I've been meaning to try that. (Maybe when I test the Fire Paste.)

I'd say from previous experience in the rain that it was the hand sanitizer which took the spark !

On the back porch I've squirted a small pool (1 squirt from a pump bottle) onto some aluminum foil to test the "hand sanitizer as fire starter" approach. It took a couple of scrapes, but only because my aim was poor. Molten blobs of misch metal rod will start purel in one strike- conditional upon hitting the pool.

The hand sanitizer looks good, since I always carry it.

Firepaste is napalm-in-a-tube! Lights and stays hot well. Only thing is the tube is heavy and after a year can totally dry out.

That just gave me an idea. A spoon-full of Fat wood into a film canister, filled with Firepaste, then sealed with tape.

I'll be that would stay lit in a steady downpour~;-)

Today I saw a spray bottle of hand sanitizer the size of a big permanent marker. Could use that and when empty, just unscrew the cap and fill with pure alcohol of somesort. The spray would probably be easier to apply than having a big bottle of the stuff. Less used too probably. Was $2 at CVS btw.

well done, brother.

i love the rainy days - wish we got more down here.

What are you talking about, vector001? We got our yearly rain just last week, and may get a bonus shower or two around Christmas.

There's just no pleasing some folks.

Just kidding: we could definitely use more rain around here.

My boys and I - they are 8 and 12 - lit up some hand sanitizer a few days ago just to check it out. That stuff does catch well, thats for sure. By itself, the flame is almost invisible.

Hey, I wonder when somebody is going to make a hand sanitizer stove?

Great post pitdog.
