Getting into blades

Hello everyone. Being a gun guy and with the current state of affairs, I figured it was time to pick up another hobby and take up knives. I can see it becoming as much of an addiction as shooting/building ar's and I'm cool with that.

Anyways I was going to ask you experts some recommendations (apologies for this being another "new guy" thread.)

I've already decided to pick up a few pieces that I researched, that being the Ruike P121 Hussar and a Civivi Elementum in micarta. The Hussar will be a beater for work and Elementum an everyday piece. I also have my eye on some other Civivis, especially the Riffle or Odium that I will probably acquire sometime. Also, the Kizer Dukes looks really cool. Also, I will probably get a RAT and a Spyderco sometime because why not and they are solid pieces from countless reviews.

I would also like to acquire a blade that has the same/similar profile to the Steel Will Cutjack or Modus. Like for it to be a flipper style. Good beefy blade looks like. It could serve double duty as work/everyday. Recommendations for a blade like that? Something other than the Modus/Cutjack that would work well? I researched the Civivi Praxis but it looks a little large for what I would be wanting, plus not too crazy about the liners. Baklash would be more practical size, but it also has extra bling for the liners. Looking to spend no more than 50 if it will serve in two capacities (i .e. work and everydayr). If it were going to be an everyday carry knife that I wouldn't beat on, I could see spending up to 100. Any good quality steel will do, not turned off by the prospect of sharpening D2.

So so many choices. I could see this collection thing becoming troublesome around Black Friday time.

Welcome to the forums wayward son.

Get a Rat 1 or 2 in D2 steel. It is still one of the best bargain knives out there.

You listed a wide range of sizes on the knives you are looking at. Are you looking for a large(r) knife for work and a smaller knife for EDC? or vice versa? The Civivi Elementum is 2.9" blade and the Hussar is 3.75". The Cutjack and Modus fall in between those.

If it were going to be an everyday carry knife that I wouldn't beat on, I could see spending up to 100.

I wouldn't be afraid to beat on a knife. It's a tool. I wouldn't hammer or pry with it, but don't be afraid to use. <- Just my opinion of course.

If you want a solid work/edc knife and willing to spend $100, a Cold Steel Code 4 ($80ish) or Recon 1 ($100) would serve you well. Many Cold Steels feature A. Demkos tri-ad lock, one of the better locks out there. I'd trust a tri-ad lock more then a liner lock for heavy use. YMMV.

Ruike makes a good budget blade too. I hear they do a good job with 14c28 at that price point.

You seem to be headed in the right direction.

besides aiming for the great stuff,
its always nice to have an extra arm around
without the hurt...

Agreed, Microtech knives are awesome. If autos aren’t legal where you are Microtech also makes manual action knives. They are a little hard to find right now but they come out in batches throughout the year. If you are a first responder/military you can order direct from their headquarters for a good discount and have it in hand in about 3 weeks

Did someone say Spyderco?

Gazz, yep thats sort of what I was going for. A somewhat larger knife for work and smaller for everyday. Just getting into knives, I'm sure the Microtech would be great, but maybe in the future. I hate to admit it but sometimes I misplace stuff. My heart would be broke to lose a 300.00 knife, not so much 50.00. Middle of the road stuff right now. Thanks for replies so far.

I started into knives around 10 years ago as kind of a cheaper substitute for buying guns as well. Not sure if it worked out as I now have a few grand in them at this point.

I am a big spyderco fan for a base level knife. Deleica, endura or PM 2 are my go to. As others have suggested, buy up a bit and you won’t be disappointed or, like most, you can go through the process of amassing a bunch of cheaper knives that won’t get used when you inevitably start getting into the nicer stuff. Many great knives in the 100- 200 range (spyderco is just one example).

I find that although I have a handful of midtecs, I tend to carry a benchmade bugout or one of the above mentioned spydercos the most.

o_O LOL! I'll bet that doesn't last long. :p

Nope, haven't lost a gun yet! After all the discussion, I will definitely consider more middle tier offerings instead of the budget stuff. I could probably afford a bit better stuff, but I am a damn penny pinching frugal sob at heart. Difficult to break that mold as I was raised to be careful and not really splurge.

Most people admittedly go the quantity over quality route to begin with. They want to try different brands, steels, styles, etc. After 30 years of carrying a knife, I've found *my* sweet spot is $50-100 range. I'm quite content with a Rat 1 D2, Endura, Recon 1, or Maserin slip joint (from Collectorknives).
