Getting into the HEST handle

Just got my HEST about a week ago and I REALLY LOVE the hollow handle design for stowing some survival items. I put a firesteel and some tinder-qwik tabs in it.

Here's my question. Let's assume I am stranded with nothing but my HEST in it's sheath. How would you get into the handles to get your survival items out?? The screws seem to turn fairly easily, but it might be a challenge to find a thin stone or stick to turn them.

Would you whittle a makeshift screwdriver out of a stick?

Maybe modify a corner of your sheath buy cutting away one layer of kydex and sanding down remaining layer to make a screwdriver tip on on the sheath?

Other ideas?

I'd go with a custom sheath that has a pouch to store something to turn the screws, a lanyard with a tool attached or make sure to carry a quarter (or another coin that works if the quarter doesn't) in your wallet. ;)

I saw someone slid a washer or two onto their lanyard. Just make sure the washer is the right size before you head out into the field.

+1.....came across that also, but don't remember where or who. Great idea though.....have to remember it when I get mine :)

What about a P38 attached to the sheath by a chicago screw.
Rotate it out and you can open your HEST or a can of soup!

Hi Vrocco, congrats on an awesome new knife :)

I think you can also just bust the handles open with a big rock. Breaks the handles permanently, but it gets the stuff out...

It was in my HEST review.

6mm flat washer fit's perfect and has a center hole large enough for 2 strands of paracord.

I have one on the lanyard and a spare on some more on the sheath.

You could attach this to your lanyard or tape or ranger rubber band it to your sheath. Just an idea. They sell them at countycomm

I always thought the washer on the lanyard was the best idea, but that is just me. I suppose the other ideas would work just as well, also.

Seems like it would be easy enough to make a kydex sheath with a little protrusion that could be used to loosen the screws.
