stunning knife- be glad I did not see it !-- tirtha is a great kami, and thats a very attractive style

I'm very sorry to have to do this, but links to Exchange threads in the discussion forums is not allowed. Perhaps you can ask the seller if you can borrow his pictures and post them here.

can also save the picture to your photobucket then repost from your own files as to not violate rules , again, great knife and good find. I often use a sellers pictures of my items because they took care in taking them and I take horrible pictures :D

Got it today... overall length right around 18.5" @ 35oz:eek: wow heavy duty blade... handle finishing karda is not quite what I was expecting but acceptable. The karda looks like it was ground too hot and the edge is very ragged/bent over in places. also the kukris tip and a bit of the belly weren't sharpened all the way( have flat spots). note that this was received from another bf member and I don't know if it was sold as a blem originally. I am very happy with the sale and satisfied with my purchase. looking forward to using it. from what the seller said and so far as I can tell it was never sharpened or used in any way at all. thanks all for humoring me so far. I will try to post up some pictures later.

Karda

weighs in at 35oz just the kukri on a postage scale and 45ish oz with everything. really do think its a great example of hand crafted blade. cant wait to test it. might sharpen it the rest of the way first though. any suggestions?

Looking forward to the pictures but I am doubting that it was origianally sold that way. I haven't seen a blem where it wasn't sharpened and had "flat spots" on the blade. Now I have seen then with missing karda/chaks and with small folds on the spine of the blade, but would be very surprised that even a blem would have significant bends or be ragged. I am guessing it was "used hard and put away unsharpened/wet" though I may be mistaken as I have not been here for years and years.

Pics were up before your post I believe... Best I could do with my iphone. The one of the kukri blade tip is of the worst flat spot. instead of an edge there is about 1" of 1/32-1/16 thick flat spot(tapers obviously). It doesn't show any signs of impact or damage just looks unsharpened. I do make my own knives as well and use them quite hard and have yet to see damage in any knife I have bought or made that looks like this. most of the time it has a very distinctive texture/etc. this just looks like it was overlooked a bit. where it is sharp(Most of the blade) is definitely functional. not shaving by a longshot but could be used as is for a lot of cutting tasks.

I can't tell much from your photos, but it should be easy to touch up the flat spot on the khukuri or the ragged edge on the karda with sandpaper and/or a small file. The steel will be pretty soft except at the edge near the belly of the main blade.

Just be careful. I would tape the edge of the blade except where you are working, and make sure always to rub the steel from the side toward the edge or point, so it doesn't catch you. Maybe use a bit of oil while sanding.

Karda is cleaning up ok so far. Worke off a killer burr still not super sharp but does have an edge which is all one could ask for. Who doesn't like sharpening anyway lol.

hmm, must have posted the pictures while I was typing up my post it happens sometimes if I get called away for work in the middle of typing. Strange. When you are sharpening it, if you can you should keep the convex edge. It makes a huge difference chopping. As was mentioned, the way it is tempered it will be hard at the belly and softer at the tip so sharpening should go pretty smoothly in that area. That is why I thought before seeing the pictures that it must have been damaged, because so many people who aren't familiar with khuks sometimes chop too near the tip and since it is softer it can cause it to fold.

Ah thanks for the info. Can understand that as i am often at work while on the forum as well... Will be sharpening it at some point this week. The karda is now quite sharp. The chakma works very well for removing a stubborn burr. No testin of the kukri yet but hopefully soon

Morald...: Congrats on your purchase and thanks for the pics. I have seen on rare occasion what you describe. They are usually pretty good about sharpening but I accept an occasional blem understanding that these blades are all handmade and it can happen. I had one that had an obvious flat spot near the cho that was just not completely sharpened but since that part is rarely used I didnt think anything of it. I do recall having another near the tip same thing but sharpening it out was no problem. I buy many blems and thats what they probably were. Aunti Yangdu is pretty good about picking those little blems out and offering them to us forumites for really cheap on DOTD. If you were to get one like that from the store you can bet she would replace it or do whatever it takes to make you happy. If you are willing to do some touching up and such you cant beat these deals anywhere. The Deradune is a model Im not real familiar with but is really an interesting shape being that thick and slim. Looks like a beefy Sirupati. I dont think ill pass one up if I ever get a chance again! Enjoy that rare find!

A couple years ago it wasn't uncommon to see khuks arrive with imperfect edges. There are times when HI (and Tora, etc.) has kami trouble/power outages and such. The good news is Tirtha was a good kami and the edge is at it's best after some sharpenings anyway. Just jump in and be careful. Khuks aren't hard to sharpen using various methods. Kardas and chakmas are always a roll of the dice as they are made by apprentices. The karda that came with my WWII was obligatory and sort of ornamental, but the one with my ASTK was fantastic. Those Deradun khuks were made for a while and were pretty much an HI M43 with an angled shoulder as opposed to the M43's curved shoulder. Should be a great chopper and they were quite popular when in production. If you wanted a heavy duty khukuri, that was a good snag:thumbup:

well about an hour with a file later I have a decent edge. Tip isn't perfect yet but is thin enough that it cuts now. Steel is much harder than I was lead tobelieve here and would seem tone midto high 50s RCA from how the file feels at the tip and near 60 at the sweet spot. Very well hardened from what I can tell and gets very sharp. So far I am very pleased with this kukri and think its ill be a real workhorse in my little collection of knives. Thanks to all on the forum who reccomend them.
