So i am looking to purchase a new edc. I was leaning towards a CRK folder (sebie or um) but also a Rick Hinderer xm is on my mind. Now im curious about the blade material for the crk and type for both. Damascus steel is pretty yes butis it a better steel for every day use or is it just for show. Another question i have is about the partially serrated blades, are they good for edc and how hard are they to sharpen. I have always stayed away from them because i cant sharpen them. My last question would be between a taunto style blade or a slicer style blade for edc. I read that taunto style blades are better at some prying but i really dont think you should do much prying with these guys but does that just mean that a taunto style has a stronger tip design?
Thanks in advance for all the helpful advice and if my questions are extremely stupid i am sorry i really dont know alot about knifes or blade material/style. Thanks

I would get a CRK Large Sebenza 21. Perfect for EDC. The Damascus is beautiful and useful for EDC because the Damascus they use is made of several decent steels all together. However, I would have one of those for show more, or for a gentleman's folder.
s35vn is an excellent EDC steel. In my experience it is easier to sharpen than s30v an holds it's edge a little longer. It's not very prone to rolling or chipping, so that's great. I do not prefer serrations as a Plain blade can do just as much as serrations can do. Serrations aren't super easy to sharpen and a plain blade is easier for slicing and cutting. However serrations are good for cardboard and take a lot less sharpening because they dull less easy. However I still prefer plain edge because if you touch the blade up like you should it takes nothing to get it to razor sharp in a couple of minutes. Serrations are better if you're in a field like the military where you don't have access to stones or sharpening.
For regular EDC use, a "slicer" style blade is better for penetration and regular uses. As you can just start cutting from the tip to the end of the blade with the belly rather than maybe the tanto missing a small spot.

So I would go with regular style blade, or insingo if you like wharncliffes like I do. And no serrations. The Sebenza makes a fine EDC for any type of use. You'll love it.

Thanks Bladechick I was just looking at some of your knife pics and you got a nice sebie. What would be the insingo blades strengths? I am a avid backpacker and i will do up to 2 weeks on a trip where i will not be able to sharpen or use a leather strap. I am also a little confused about the blade steels still. Would his Damascus hold a edge longer deal with more use better or does the s35vn have better better edge retention, sharpening ease, and over all stronger?

I'm back again because obviously all of the helpful people are in hiding right now lol.
I would give edge holding to s35vn over the Damascus.
I have been using my Sebenza daily for over a month without sharpening it or touching it up and it still shaves hair as well as slices newspaper. CPM-s35vn holds its edge very well and is right on the same edge holding target with s30v with improved toughness over s30v.
For use I would pick the CPM-s35vn over the Damascus.

There is no strengths that the Insingo blade would have over the regular blade shape. It's just preference. I like Wharncliffe blades because they are slightly easier to sharpen than a knife with belly, and I just prefer the look of a straight blade and it makes easier work of boxes and the like in my opinion because you don't have to move your hand. But if you have a decent grasp on sharpening this shouldn't be an issue and belly is also good for different uses. Like food for example.

Really it all comes down to personal preference on blade shape.

I would suggest a small Sebenza 21 plain edge. Skip the tanto unless you want to pierce samurai armor. Skip serrations unless you cut a lot of rope and are willing to learn how to sharpen the serrated edge.

I would love to learn how to sharpen it to a razor edge if anyone knows, but i do not plan on cutting much rope. Mainly for backpacking. Bladechick what are you doing with your knife? Oh and i def dont think ill be piercing any armor lol.
