Last year I asked about sleeping bags a few times and finally settled on one. A Big Agnes Lost Ranger and an Insulated Air Core pad to go with it. Will be getting my tax return sometime after the 14th and plan to pick this up from a local shop after that.

This setup packs small, is relatively light for the money and I can order it locally for a good price.

My 20 degree Slumberjack bag weights around 4.5lbs with a pack size of around 9"x20". Winter bag weights around 7lbs and packs to 12"x20". My Therm-a-rest Basecamp XL pad is really comfy weights 4lbs and packs to 30 x 5.1 in. Summer weight is around 8.5lbs pounds with a large pack size. Winter weight is 11lbs.

The Big Agnes Lost Ranger is 3.25lbs with a pack size of 8"x8.5". The pad weighs 1.7lbs and pack size is 5.5" x 9". Total weight is around 5lbs with a much smaller pack size. This lets me shed 3.5 pounds and regain a lot of space in my back which is great.

My current 3 day+ pack is a Blackhawk SOF Ruck Pack Kit. The pack is 6000cu/in total. The main compartment is 3220 cu inches. That is where I keep my sleeping back when on a trip. It has two detachable side pockets that are 440cu/in each for a total of 880cu/in. So total Volume for the pack with out the side pockets is 5120cu/in.

Winter load out with 10 meals is around 45 pounds. Summer Load out about 40 lbs. My pack will be under 40lbs. Switching to the Big Agnes system I can then move my Frame over to my Medium Alice Pack and shed additional weight. I'm guestimating that my summer load out will be around 35lbs and rather compact. Weight never was an issue for me and I'm on an exersize program to get me back into good shape so I can handle hikes with lots of it.

I'm planning to do a lot of backpacking and some trail clearing this summer. The lower Pack weight allows me to carry more fun stuff and trail clearing tools. A 30" Bow saw, Machete or Khukri and a Medium axe like the Council Tool Hudson Bay. This summer is going to be awesome!!

So what do you think of this setup and what cool camping/backpacking things will you be getting with your return?

My tax return will buy me some silver, and the rest goes into the savings account.

Precius metals are always good, so is the savings account. After I pay off some school expences and get my new bag and pad, I plan to put some money into savings for a few months. Am looking at getting a new Hard Tail mountain Bike this spring but figure it's better to have some cash in savings first.

I already bought my "present", a nice new Taylor guitar. A good chunk of the rest is going into the car as I write; new timing belt and comprehensive tune-up. (about 700 bucks...)
