Well it Arrived yesterday! Well my impressions...it will be a good field duty knife over all it looks like.
Handle a little off for me but it fits my smaller hands pretty good. The hilt "Guards" won't deflect an incoming knife blade, but then I don't intend to get in to knife fights, but they will keep the hand from slipping forward! That was one of the criteria I had for the things I plan to use this knife for.
Sheath, don't know why some people say they hate them, this one seems secure and such, a bonus for me when I got the knife, as it probably will be a general carry for general use.
Blade well I'm generally a knife user, I figure out how to use any knife on hand to get a task on hand done. I'd like to treat it like a 7-8" blade to keep the tip area clear and sharp with general cutting and such, but some thing tells me I'll be using all the knife blade to maximize cutting potential. But the blade looks like its going to be tough enough for what I'm going to put it through. I'll have a smaller 4" fix blade and a few folders on hand, but this blade seems its going to get more general work from my experience tells me because it seems capable of it and a bigger blade is ALWAYS needed to do things in the field. I don't intend to use this knife as a hard use wood cutter and batoner, but it probably will see that share of work if needed, brush whacking will probably be its main duty. But for processing game and other field duties its going to see lots of use, and compliment or have to due the duty of a blade I lost or forgot to take in to the field...which happens at times.
The duties I'm going to put this big knife through is from Steelhead fishing to spearing (not with the knife) and other places I go in the spring, then there is hunting and general camping on water areas (hence I wanted a SS blade) wading trout streams and rivers where a big blade is handy hack a way through or use it for making an impromptu tool or fire starting materials. And at 11.2 ounces its pretty light and handy for packing it in. I'm not a watch the ounce type of tourist hiker or packer, I take what I need and bear and just get use to it, but there are times when lighter weights come in like if a boat turns over or one has to swim a river. The lighter weight and slim profile of the knife and sheath make it a no brainer not to keep it on you as a general carry blade, that shouldn't impede swimming with it if needed. Also having had a few feral dogs try and take me down over the years taught me the value of big bladed knife on hand, but the lightness and blade size of the Marauder sure make me wish I had it at those times!
As a fighting knife, I don't have much experience with "Real Fighting" knives, but the rubber guards are good for keeping your hand from slipping up the blade. But would seem to get cut if one tried to parry down the blade with it. But its offensive capabilities would be pretty hurtful to an attacker, that I think is what would be the deterrent to keep from knife attacker. But its nice to know you got a Beastly Quick response light big blade if you do NEED to use it in such a manner.
From the price point and quality of the blade and what from what I read it can do, the Marauder will do what I need and then a way lot more I feel and be capable to the tasks at hand I'll throw at it. I asked in the General Knife forums for a recommendation for a big SS Bowie and this knife popped up as price point was a concern, and well I this one as the first answer and well, I'm glad I asked in the blades forum! The Marauder and its Sheath the Secure-Ex are the perfect combination I been looking for in that price range! The only problem is when researching this knife...that Cold Steel OSI knife would seem to be the perfect companion blade for this one. The two just seem to go together...
I'd like to hear what people's experiences are with the Marauder. Read some reviews but it would be nice to hear more about what people put this knife through.
Edit Added: Forgot to say I showed this to a "Real Outdoors" person who said "That's to much blade, usually you don't need that much blade." to which I responded "Some times you do!" Which with my experience its nice to have it when you do need it.
