In order to get nice, clean and straight bevels, do you finish the knife on the belt grinder, or do you finish it with a file to get those sharp lines? What's the secret to matching angles everytime you put the knife to the belt?

Of course experience is the big thing, but any advice would really help.

Thanks!

My understanding, and I'm just learning, is that you have to take a bunch of steel bars and turn large parts of them into steel dust.

A decent grinder doesn't hurt.

Like so much in life, it's practice, practice, practice......

If you are having trouble keeping everything square on the grinder, then get a filing jig and when you get the biggest part of your grind done just slap on the jig file in the shoulders then go back and remove the file marks with fine grit belts (do this carefully, and you will get the lines in the plunge everytime)Now if you are talking about a double edge grind such as a dagger you must scribe a center line on both sides of the profiled blade and then just grind to the line. With a little practice and a sharp eye you will get the hang of it.Also when you are getting close to the final dimensions of the grind only make one or two passes across the belt with lite pressure then check the grind and how close you are to the lines, slow and easy will finish you up with clean crisp lines better than hard and fast grinds.
