Hey all,

After all my research, and thanks to all the useful info here on the forum, I've decided to order an Ameribrade grinder. I'm going to order the grinder, small wheel attachment, and a 3/4" steel small wheel. I was going to order a 10" contact wheel also but they are out of stock. To save a few dollars, I'm going to get the motor and vfd separately.

I'm trying to figure the right motor and vfd. I'd like a 1.5hp Ironhorse motor, my garage doesn't have 220 outlets, so I think I'd be going with a single phase 110 motor? Would this be the correct one?

Then, with that motor, would the KBAC 27D be a great choice for vfd, specs wise?

I know there's a lot of grinder, motor, vfd questions asked here, and I tried to research as much as possible, but I'm getting mixed up on some of the technical specs of these motors and vfd's. So your help is greatly appreciated!

Ah thank you! That was something I kept getting mixed up on. So that motor with a 27D. Now, there's not much price difference between a 1.5 and 2hp motor. Logic tells me to go with the more horsepower, is there any reason why I wouldn't want to?

110VAC will only get you up to 1.5hp. If you want to run 2hp, you'll need to supply 220VAC input to the VFD.

Also, I'd recommend SO cable for the power cord and the connections to the motor. I think Wayne Coe and others sell a "wiring kit" with everything you need, but don't quote me on that. At any rate, you'll want 12/3 for the power cord, and 12/4 for the VFD connection to the motor. I think 14 gauge may work as well. I don't recall the currect draw of the 110 setup at the moment.

Ah ok, I'll take a look at that as well. Starting to close in on the price for the grinder, motor, vfd package from Ameribrade lol.

You bring up a good point that is often overlooked. When trying to save a few bucks sourcing all the Extra small items needed to assemble the Grinder. The parts and shipping costs come close to the Package Deal Price but also include all the time and headache of assembling versus just "Plug and Play" Package. I don't think you save much on parts you save mostly assembly Labor and Packaging.

To add to Busto's comments ....

If the motor and or VFD dies, doesn't fit, won't run right, etc. and you ordered them separated from the grinder, it is your problem. If you order the package form a supplier, you get customer service, ... and a warranty.

Call automation direct if you are going to use them. You can get the motor, vfd, proper wire and cable glands in one shot. Much easier than sourcing it separately, especially in small towns/ A

These are excellent points. I did a lot of pondering about it last night, and decided to go ahead with a package from them. The price was close, and there's definitely something to be said about having it set up right from the get go, and having that customer service option. I'm going to call them on lunch break!

Good to hear! Everything I’ve read about them has been positive. Did you get the small wheel attachment from them?

Their small wheel attachment is awesome. I have one I use on my Pheer. I run it with a wheel on top.

Yep, I have one of their small wheel attachments and it is fantastic. Tracks straight, unlike my other belt grinder's small wheel that is a well-known brand.
