Getting ready to fly

I have never flown commercially before, and wonder if anyone has advice about taking a knife along. Can I put one in my checked luggage? I am driving to the west coast, then flying back to the midwest. Don't want to be on the road that long without a knife.....

Yes you can put it in your checked luggage. I do where ever I go. Put it in with your bathroom stuff.

I put mine in my checked luggage buried in my socks.
(This is even more secure if the socks are dirty.)

I put mine (a Victorinox Fieldmaster and a CRKT M21) in an outside zipper pocket so I can immediately put them in my pocket at the baggage carousel. Never had one disturbed and I fly a lot (once a month).

I once had some BS with a small folder in my checked luggage flying out of Belfast, only time it's ever happened to me. I think the problem was mainly caused by the inexperienced private security guard doing the scans on the way into the airport calling his supervisor for advice. The supervisor was an idiot, who at one point was walking around the airport with my open knife, screaming, "ILLEGAL BLADE!" He called the cops, and the cops told him to put it back in my suitcase. Never got an apology, but I did catch my flight, and was only delayed a short time.

Yes but if the socks are like mine they may confiscate them as a Bio-hazard and hold you for attempted Bio-terrorisum.:foot:

I've flown to the UK and around the US and always have a knife in my checked luggage. I've haven't had a problem yet. I do use a TSA approved lock though. I have no idea if it makes a difference but I feel better having my bag locked.
