Hi all,
I'm been using a backpack (Dana design bridger), sleeping bag (with stuff sack), and thermarest sleeping mat (with stuff sack) for about a year to live on out of the country, well now I'm back and all those things smell pretty bad. I can wash the sleeping bag in a washing machine but I'm not sure what to do with everything else to remove that bad smell. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks.

You can wash the backpack too (after removing any frames or rigid components). I like to use Lyson concentrated disinfectant (the stuff hospitals use) in my wash. As for the sleeping mat, I'd spray some Lysol (diluted to the recommended solution), rinse and then air everything out. Machine dry the Sleeping bag and Backpack if you can.

Baking soda is the tried and true smell remover 1/4-1/2 cup in the washing machine along with the detergent. Borax works too though not as well as baking soda. Even soaking stuff in the solution works as I do with things that can't go through the machine.

Baby bottle steriliser is good on anything that is coulourfast as it kills the bacteria that causes smells. Good on salad leaves to kill greenfly, removes tea and coffee stains from cups and kills mould in showers too. Make sure you follow the instructions. In the UK it is called 'Milton'.
