Getting rid of those micro-sized dings

I dropped a knife on a hard surface and now it has a tiny imperfection that is visible only when you look down on the edge and the light is just right. What is the best way to take this out? I have a sharpmaker, but would it be better to pass it on a smooth steel? Or should I use one of the sharpmaker hones to do it?
 
When ever I see that, particularly on my kitchen knives, its time to re sharpen.
I don't think your smooth steel will work for this.

I do not have a Sharpmaker, but if it will remove steel, it should work a treat.
 
Given how it happenned, I agree with Nosmo. Since the edge has deformed from quite the impact, go ahead and re-hone the edge. You may have weakened the steel around the dent too, so cutting a fresh edge, so to speak, sounds like a good idea here.
 
No matter what you do, you'll never be satisfied with the results. You'll always "see" that invisible ding you put there. So save yourself the agony of trying to "fix" it, bite the bullet and go out and buy a replacement. Oh, and send that old dinged up one to me! :D
 
Thanks for the info. I was afraid of that. I am beginning in sharpening and this was one of my closet queens. It will have to wait until I practice on some beaters.

This knife sounds like a great candidate to send to Ben Dale at Edg-Pro. He will sharpen the knife for free.

I warn you, it will look better than new. Of course, then everything else will look bland. The next thing you know, you'll have a sweaty VISA card in your hand as you dial the phone, "Hello, Ben...?"
 
Tourist - I have one one order. Can I still qualify for a free sharpening??
 
I know just how you feel Boink.

However when you get the Edge Pro
take it really slowly and tape the sides of the knife right to the edge.
I use black insulating tape on the blade table as well as all special knives.
Experiment on an old clunker till you can make the blade even on both sides with no scratches etc.


Trust me you will love it but Ben would love to sharpen that knife for you.......

You have just been given some good advice. I use blue painters' tape on the bed of my Edge-Pro, and I wipe the knife and the bed often to keep the slurry from scratching or defacing the decorative finish.

Ya' know, considering that you are now a client, and you have a very special knife (and that Ben is a really nice guy), I wouldn't be a bit surprised to find out that he helped you!
 
Thanks for the tips, guys. I had not thought about scratching up a nice finish while putting a sharp edge on some of these knives.
