Anyone have any stories of getting ripped off buying a knife?

I remember I went out and wanted to get a new knife after years of not buying one. I didn't want to order online or do any research, just decided I'd get a knife that I thought was quality and would only pay $50 for it.

I got so hosed, I wound up paying $50 for a Taylor S&W Homeland Security folder: http://www.amazon.com/Smith-Wesson-SWHS1-Homeland-Security/dp/B00172UK46

It wasn't a terrible knife, but I found I overpaid on it by an extreme amount plus I think the Smith & Wesson name got the best of me. Worst yet, I used the receipt to test how well it cut.

So now I use it as my $50 beater knife and my lesson to never buy in town on an impulse and do research on what I buy beforehand. I had always had good luck before this buying Bucks, KaBars and Schrades, never ran into these high-quality ( compared to gas station junkers ) low-cost Chinese stuff and I got suckered hard this time.

The store never did make it right. Oh well, fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. I haven't bought another item from them since.

First knife I purchased was a Smith and Wesson SWAT Auto Part serrated for about $70. I ultimately gave it away.

Ordered an Ontario RAT-3 D2 from a seller on Amazon's marketplace.

I received the 1095 version, for the D2 price. A 30$ difference.

KennyB, as far as ripoffs are concerned that really isn't too bad.

There are people here who've been taken for hundreds because of shady / inconsiderate / unreliable deals.

Count your blessings; your lesson was learned on a budget! ;)

I never really got ripped of anything worth mentioning. Just a cheap gerber folder for $40 then they were $20 next week....big deal $20.

In South Africa you get ripped off everytime you buy a knife locally!
to convert a couple of knife prices back form South African Rands to US dollar you end up paying :
For a:
spyderco Millitary - US$ 355
Zero tolerance ZT200 - US$ 263
ZT301 - US$ 485
Chris Reeve Large Sebenza - US$ 592
Benchmade Mini Rukus - US$ 335

Volumes are low in South Africa (obviously because its so damn expensive) so most of us just import ourselves from knifecenter.com etc

The first knife I bought after I started getting interested and looking at knife forums was a cold steel urban pal. I bought it from a dealer in a Filipino forum. It turned out to be counterfeit.
