I have allways enjoyed cutlery and have allways carried a folder of some sort with me. I have gone through many cheapies that I have either lost or broke. In addition I keep good care of a Buck folder and Kershaw straight blade. I finally decided to get serious about a good folder and ordered a Spyderco Native lightweigt. Was this a good choice for everyday cary? How do I sharpen the serated edge? Also what is a good folder I can cary on a plane, the Native I think is too big. Thanks Alot!

I've heard a lot of people say that thier Benchmade 705 is a realy good knife and it can be carried on a plane without any trouble.

Hello Harv,
Please allow myself to introduce yself.
It is I,

You can't go wrong with any Spdie, in my opinion, or as the tekkie-nerds say, IMO, so pick whatever floats your cork.

As for SHARPENING... get Spyderco's Tri-Angle sharpening system.
I am totally unable to get an edge on ANY blade, unless I use their system.
It's great for serrated edges as well... probably better than anything else on the market.

As for a "Plane Knife", any fixed blade of over 8 inches will do.

Not sure about the last bit of advice,

Welcome to the forums! You absolutely bought a super knife for your new daily carry. I carry my native everyday and love it! The sharpmaker is an excellent system too. Works very well on plain and serrated edges.

Spyderco in Golden makes some of the best value, hardworking knives around and their sterling customer service is tough to beat. Like Microtech, you'd hardly ever see a bad knife from their line.

This from somebody who isn't even keen on hole-in-the-blade designs but gives credit where it's due.

When you get tired of your Spyderco (why drill a hole in a perfectly good blade?), try a small Sebenza. The small 'Benza is airport friendly, and also does not frighten people.

The FAA regs are a blade over 4" and/or 'menacing' = illegal. 'Menacing' often means serrations.

Hope this helps, Walt

Thanks for all of the replies, I'm glad I posted.

Welcome to the forums.Great Choice. Spyderco can't be beat for the price range. All of their designs are well thought out. You won't find a spyderco that has only one good attrubute to it ( some companies have good handles and crappy blades etc, some have crappy handles and blades to

For sharpening your best bet probably would be the sharpmaker. I prefer bench stones but you can't sharpen serrations on them. For serrations I resort to a diamond rod freehand, much harder to get good results with that than with a sharpmaker.
As for airports, you native is almost perfect. Serrations can get you into trouble as aot of the regulation relies on the security officers judgement. And they always hire sheeple. But its fine on size, and can even get through with the serrations in some cases. Its small enough they may never ask you to open it.
