Getting some steel tested?

I have some tools made out of a mysterious "government steel" that I'd like to have tested and figure out exactly what it is. Anyone know of a place that would do that? Cheaper is preferred.

should be a lots of sources in detriot [motor city].i do'nt think it's going to be cheap since equipment to do this is high tech.

Is there any way for you to trace the tools back to the maker and find out the steel that way?

a full spectrum test costs $90 at most places btw. though if i can see pictures of a spark test i'd have a rough idea of what's in the steel.

So I made a call and he said it's "713 something stainless" and "a moly based steel."

Can anyone tell me about 700 series stainless steel?

Inconel 713 won't work well as a knife steel, you can find its composition here:

Well they aren't knives so I don't think it matters much.
