what would be cheapest and easiest?? I have a customer who wants happy 30th anniversary carl and trish or something on one side of a blade, I only have 1/16" stamps and feel I might misalign the letters so I want to know what are my options for getting this done???

Take it to any engraver who does trophies. It is easy to do on the pantograph.Fancy fonts,upper/lower case, variable size,etc.-no problem. It won't cost more than a couple of dollars.Don't try to stamp it in,you will never get it right, and the mistakes are permanent. If you were set up for that size of etching you wouldn't have asked,so I'll assume you don't have the equipment for fancy etching.Engraving is the standard for this kind of marking.I do it every week.I also mark custom knives,"Made for JOHN DOE",or whatever is appropriate,by engraving.

Stacy, do you have a pantograph engraver of your own? I've always wanted one of those. :)

Yes,I've got one.I have sold several spares over the years.I'll check with an engraver friend and see if he has a spare small Hermes he wants to get rid of.He may be selling a lot of equipment in the next year,as he plans to move to GA and retire next fall.If he can't sell the business wholly,he will sell the contents and building separately.I'll keep everyone posted. He has already given me a lot of equipment like tumblers, hand engraving tools, blast abrasives, etc. When he closes up it may be the mother-lode.

I have two pantagraphs although they never get any use. I will need to set one up very soon and start using it for the Hamley Saddle Co. logo. The main trouble with them is the font is limited to standard block letters. I want a computer programed one next time. Thats is my my advice also is to take the knife to a jeweler and pay him the going rate.

I've taken stuff to jewelers who laser etch, that worked well to do what you are describing and was very inexpensive.

Hey how much does a pantograph cost?

Sean

Depending on the size and type, they run from $7-800,to $2-3000.The computerized ones are $6-8000,and laser units go $10,000-15,000.
My friend has a bunch of computer units and one laser engraver. We are currently experimenting with laser scrimshaw. Results are promising.
A while back someone asked about logos on sheaths. The laser engraver can do that too.Cost for laser engraving is quite low.

I found my pantograph on EBay. It's just a small one but it works great for marking my knives.

I think I paid $250 for it.
