Anybody know a good place for resources to get started with knife making? Basic stuff, materials needed, prices equipment needed that kind of junk. I want to see if this is something that I have the resources/motivation to do. Thanks.

If you aint already motivated forget it. The high expence, countless hours and little or no financial profit per hour expended is a major consideration. Saying that though, if you make your first you will not stop there and you will be glad you started.

Oh, BTW - this is the place. This is where you get started.

Books are a good source for info, two that I'd suggest are "$50 Knife Shop" by Wayne Goddard and "The Complete Bladesmith" by Jim Hrisoulas.

Read here...when you're done... read the archives. There is so much info here that it is amazing. Someone sometime has probably asked your question. If not ask it yourself. Someone will come along and answer it or say .."use the search function" :D
If you want books go to ebay and look around there. There is usually a few at a decent price available.
Book recomendations...The Fifty Dollar Knife Shop. The wonder of Knifemaking. Knife Talk 1 and 2. Custom Knifemaking 10 projects from a master craftsman.

Here's a list of links to tutorials that cover a lot of ground:

Dan Gray's Tutorials Page

I think what Roger said is right - this work takes a great deal of commitment for relatively little reward, other than the accollades of one's peers, the satisfaction of a job completed and the happiness on a customer's face when he first sees your work. The sweat, pain and slow progress of working steel into something functional sends a lot of good people running. :) Non-knife people are shocked at the prices of custom knives; collectors and serious users understand our work and realize the incredible value a handmade knife represents in its maker's time and talent. That's worth more than the paltry money any day.

Ask all the questions you want right here. You'll never find a more helpful bunch of professionals anywhere. Use the search function; it's a treasure of experience. Good luck! And have fun.

Way to go..the hardest part is deciding to just do it. Then the steel gets in your blood and all you can do is think about knives..nice, beautiful, sharp, shiny, wonderful knives. They will consume every minute of youre awake and drift into your mind while you sleep. Youll long for the steel shavings on your hands and in your clothes, the satisfaction of a clean cut..other than that youll be completely the same.. And youll have everyone here to thank!

Very well put. The biggest thing IMO is having the drive and loving what you're doing. If you go about it half heartedly, you may as well not bother. It will take a long time to try to profit from making knives. I go to sleep with knives on my mind and wake up the same. It truely is a wonderful sickness. :D
