Rear,Read Read. Wayne Goddard's,The $50 Knife Shop: David Boye's ,Step-by-step Knifemaking : Jim Hrisoulas', The Complete Bladesmith. Also check out the book lists, suppliers, and tutorials at, www.knifehow.com .
There is no "best" steel to start with.A couple of good ones are 5160 and O-1.You can get O-1 from most any knife supplier.Get the catalogers from Texas Knife Supply, Jantz, and K&G. They are full of supplies, equipment, information and pictures.A kit is a good way to get started too.

How to make knives by RW Loveless and R. Barney. Great read. You can find it on e-bay, and in the back of just about any knife mag. Supplies, Ann Sheffield, 1800-874-7007 K&G the Mcfalls. are great folks. 1-800-972-1192. Mike Lovett http://www.lovettknives.com/
