Getting the 5

I'll be ordering an Esee-5 next week. I wanted something that would stand up to the rigors of SHTF. I hope to never have to use it for its intended purpose. What should I expect when I get it? I live right on the coast in Florida (Merritt Island) so what can I do to prevent rust on the cutting edge. I am a knife newb with the exception of pocket folders and this is my first significant knife purchase.

Personally with all the talk of the SHTF situations, I hope it happens soon.

I been pretty damn bored for years now, it might make life more interesting.....LOL

I would expect mostly fair weather with the occasional Hurricane.

But seriously, I don't worry too much about rust; if S ever HTF, it will likely take any accumulated rust on your new knife away along with it.
Other than that, maybe a light coat of protectant, and just use it; that will keep any rust off the unprotected edge.

BTW, I see this is your first post, welcome to the forum, that's a nice knife that you've chosen.

Bad form Gentlemen, bad form.

Welcome to the ESEE forum and Bladeforums, glad you're here.

With the 5, and the rusting edge, in reality, using it and sharpening it will take care of that for you. Rust is not really that harmful, unless left unattended. So, maintain your knife with a good oil, I like mineral oil, and a good wipe down after some extended use, and your good to go.

Once again, welcome.

Thanks for the insight, I appreciate it. I'm happy to be here. I hope I can find some areas/time to get some good use out of it so I can enhance my skillset.

I've got babies that I want to see grow up. I'll take boredom over chaos any day of the week.

This forum is a great place to build those skills, as well as the Wilderness Survival Skill forums we have here. Check out the rest of Bladeforums, I'll see ya in a couple of weeks:D

Its a great place with tons of knowledge, and great people, ESEE forums is one of the best.

Well if you dont like chaos its best to turn around and leave this forum;)
You mighty wanna visit the sissies at Becker :p

On a serious note, I use TUFF-cloth on my blades. I live 10 miles from the north sea and have no rust issues at all. 1095 isnt THAT rust sensitive as i expected at first. My 4 was unused, unprotected for a month or something and barely had rust traces.

I can appreciate the chaos in certain aspects of my life.

Congrats. I have experience with Florida weather not to mention extreme salt conditions. I would coat the exposed metal with a high quality metal protectant. I know there are knife products. I'm more experienced with weapons products. My new favorite is the slip 2000 grease. A little goes a long way. I'll even put a light coat of oil, let it sit and wipe dry before coating with the grease. The biggest thing to remeber is after being exposed to very salty Conditions the first thing you need to do is get it clean whatever expose metal products you have clean and reprotected. I have seen salt eat right through a magnesium gearbox even with protective measures taken. I don't think you will ever have to worry about your knife having that happening. I'm a newb to the esee line myself so my esee knives haven't been exposed to much. What I gave you is my receipe for protecting any knife regardless of steel in a harsher environment. Boeing has a aresol product out that is called boeingshield which is a great product too. I got away from it because I think it gets to sticky and attracts dust etc. I don't need my weapon failing because of such things. But for a knife I think it would work well if u want another idea

Sorry and welcome to the forum.

There is alot of talk about the SHTF situations but it never happens, but its always good to be prepared......
