Morning gentlemen!
I'm going to be sending these two neck knives off to the Bos to get heatreated along with some others. These two are D2 and I was wondering what would be the best recipie for heattreating these little buggers. They will not only be used for defense but also random/utility tasks as well. Should they also be cryoed? Any help would be appreciated.

Bob Dozier does, in my oinion, the best heat treat on D2 of anybody. Newt Livesay worked for him and is familiar with his methods. I don't know how open they would be with their heat treat formula, but they know what they are doing.

If you are sending these to Paul Bos (the Boss), all you need to tell him is what these two knives will be used for. He has heat treated thousands of D-2 blades.

He has openly shared his recipe (formula) with anyone that will ask. I imagine the majority of the Custom makers that do their own heat treating, either got the recipe from Paul or from another maker that got it from Paul.

There is no ONE formula for heat treating D2 or any steel.
The element make up of the steel has more to do with the heat treat than any other parameter. I would investigate the spec sheet and manufacturers recommnedations for the type of performance you want. The reason for this is that the mill has a tolerence when adding the elements of the steel. This can vary from batch to batch. Ask for the mill certs on the material when you buy it. These will supply you with the amounts of each material they used to roll the material at the mill.
Then I would give a recommendation to the heat treater for the hardness and type of heat cycles you want done to your blades.
There is a difference.

Thanks guys. Darrel, I received the steel from Kovals so I have no Idea who made it. I did as you said AT. I wrote Paul and told him of there intended use and gave him a link to this thread so we will see what he thinks. What's interesting is the pics of the knives came out actual size so you can see they are dainty little things and will see more utility than defense, God willing.
Thanks for the input guys.
Coonskinner, Mr.Dozier does heattreating for other peoples knives?

I don't think he does. I just knew he did a good job of treating D2 and didn't know whether he would discuss his methods or not. But I didn't know that the heat treat specs for a given steel varied like Mr. Ralph said it did. I was glad to hear about that.

One of the reasons I like these forums so much is the willingness of knowledgeable people to share that knowledge.

This is why I let Paul Bos do my heat treating. It's a science, I'm a knifemaker.
