Getting the sharp tip back on my RC-3

Quick question. My ESEE/RC-3 took a spill on a concrete floor and mashed the point pretty good. I have cleaned up the worst of the damage, but would like to restore that super sharp tip it came from the factory with. What's the best method? I have a sharpmaker, strop, steel, various diamond stones at my disposal. I've checked out a few videos on Youtube using the grooves of the Sharpmaker to restore the point, but no real success. Any help appreciated:thumbup:

From everything I have read about their warranty, they may replace the knife.
Check it out.

Hey Rayban. Oh, I know all about the warranty!:D I'm a regular over in the ESEE sub-forum. No, I'd like to fix it myself. The knife (even the tip) is perfectly functional and razor sharp. I just wanted that little extra pointy tip:p No reason whatsoever to have it replaced. Thanks!

DON'T GRIND THE SPINE!

You will use a two step grinding process with your coarsest diamond hone. Start at a high microbevel angle (about 20 per side) and grind the whole bevel making sure to stop at the tip, this will fix the tip and set a profile. Next lower your angle and reset the bevel to your desired angle, removing the micro you just used to fix the damage. Sharpen as normal after and you will be like new again.

I like that! good luck on the job!

Restoring a broken tip involves quite a bit of metal removal and will take a while without a DMT Extra Coarse Continuous stone.

I've personally used my Paper Wheel to regrind a new tip on 2 knives(both were fairly thin). I typically just go through the same motions as though the knife still has a tip at the end of the blade, and that motion would remove any excess metal while retaining the same blade geometry. Looking at my Endura 4, I'll be damned if anyone could tell that I broke the tip off twice.

Thanks for all the replies so far. Just to clarify, the tip isn't broken off. Just fell point first onto a concrete floor and sort of bent the very tip of the blade. I've restored the point, now I'm refining it. SPXtrader, thanks for the link!
