This may be moved, but I finally found a congress that I like. I was trying to be all slick and show my gf, as valentines day is coming up. Well, it's a bulldog brand congress, with a huge etch of 2 dogs fighting. She immediately starts with the Voice. I will not ever get you something from a company that promotes dog fighting. Now, I don't believe that BB fights dogs in the backyard, but I am wondering if she has a point. I abhor dog fighting, and probably 99% of folks on this forum agree on this point. I just wonder, what would you do in this situation-I'm not going to buy a knife that will get me in a fight, especialy a fight where I come across as a proponent of dog fights. I know that is a huge leap of logic, but it's taking place anyhow. your thoughts?

I wouldn't buy it, but only because I wouldn't like seeing that etch of 2 dogs fighting. I'm not sure though I would say they are promoting dog fighting, although I hope they would admit their etch choice was of poor taste eventhough these dogs were used for dog fighting.

This is an old style traditional knife. Again, that helps a bit. If I would see this type of etch on a new style tactical frame lock or something like that, I would see it far worse. THEN I would be saying they are promoting dog fighting. ANd trust me, I'm not politically correct by any stretch of the imagination.

As an owner of pitbuls, I abhor dog fighting, it's destroyed so many of these incredibly loving dogs.

Excellent! Another post that will confound KV. I love it!

You have managed to combine your relationship with your gf, clearly a community center topic, with the politics of dogfighting, AND a knife which could be general or gadgets and gear. Not to mention the W&C potential. KV's head will spin when he sees this. I doff my chapeau to you.

:D

Congrats...you are only the second person to make me go crazy over moving a thread. VG was the first. There are so many variables that make me want to move it! Oh, what to do, what to do?!!! Someone post a nudie pic so it'll make my decision that much easier. :p ;) :D

It's a very fascinating question that you raise, dijos. The way I see it, there are 2 major issues at stake - 1) how disturbing/distasteful do you find the blade etching? 2) would you prefer to shun the knife or your girlfriend's sensibilities?

This is my take on it: I do not believe that the BB etch was made in order to promote the loathsome activity of dogfighting. However, the etch is indeed in very poor taste. I love dogs more than I love any particular knife company. Therefore, if this were my own dilemma, I would contact the BB comany and tell them my thoughts on their etch and how I choose to forego purchasing their product due to the dogfighting picture.
In regards to the second question, since it's not knives in general that your girlfriend objects to, but the porr picture on the knife, I think that you are choosing prudently by not entering into conflict with her over something that you yourself dislike. Such a disagreement would unnecessarily place you at odds with her over something that wouldn't have been an issue in the first place.

That's how I see your predicament, in a nutshell. Thanks for bringing it up, because it brings to my attention the unnecessary picture that BB uses on their knives; it was something I'd always noticed without ever becoming completely cognizant of.

Cultivate your prejudices! That's what I always say to knife collectors. There are so many knives out there it's impractical to buy them all. Even if you have enough money to buy them all and build an addition to your house so you'll have space to keep them in, you don't have time to fondle them all! So you have to decide. The more knives you dislike the better -- that's one you don't have to buy! Save your money and space and fondling time for the best!

Moving to Blade Discussion Forum. Topic has been more knife related than anything else.

anybody got a pick of the etching on the blade? It would go a long way towards helping me decide if it really is that distastful or not.

Perhaps the etch originated before "civilized" people found dog fighting distasteful (note I do not approve of the activity).

Bulldogs are considered by many to be "the" winning breed, therefore tough, etc.

Congress' are a good knife design. Congrats.

P.S. I vote for sandpapering the gf.

Put the knife away if it offends your girlfriend. It is the right thing to do. You might also want try looking for your missing testicles.

I did some reading on their site, the fighting dog logo is only used once every five years. So I guess from a collectors point of view it's desirable to buy the limited stamped versions.

But if you just like the pattern, they offer another logo just a pic of two dogs ( not fighting).
They seem like nice knives for the money, check out Queen Cutlery too, nice knives, no dogs and they use D2 steel on most of their blades.

There's alot of knives out there without having to compromise over a tasteless logo. Heck, I just passed on purchasing a really nice Kellam Puukko cause I didn't like the names of the knife. (Slasher)

this is a picture of the etch, although on a different knife:

Quick question here- Is the pic of a "dog fight" or is it two dogs fighting. I hate to desturb people here but...... Dogs do fight!! If the pic is of two dogs in a ring surrounded by people betting on them then I agree- BAD! But if it is just 2 dogs going at it then that is nature and in my mind is as OK as putting ducks flying on the knife- that is what the animals do. Further to that, is there blood or huge gouges on the dogs- can your GF be sure that the dogs are not just playing with each other (that is often how dogs play).

I am probably just biased as I believe in nature and abhore those people who try and force us to ignore what goes on in the natural world, but that is my take on it. Would your GF be bothered if the knife had a pic of 2 bighorn sheep hitting heads:confused: . Just my food for thought.

The fighting dogs wouldn't necessarily deter me from buying the knife, but the gaudy logo covering the entire blade would, Yuck.

Ummm... I disagree. Choosing an option because it makes an SO more comfortable is not something unmanly. If anything, standing up and saying that the emblem is OK and that she should just be fine with it will get you yelled at more than anything else.

I think that is pretty much my take on the whole thing too.
