GG&G Battle Hawk or RMJ Shrike

My experience with S7 is that it is the toughest steel out there as far as pounding goes, when properly heat treated. Some other steels may hold a better edge, but the S7 takes a hell of a lot of doing to break it. That being said, I like the Shrike design far better. Insulated handle and the main edge suitable for cutting wood, not just going through barriers. I don't know what steel the Shrike is made of but I haven't yet heard of problems with them breaking. For myself, I'd rather have a lighter, balanced tomahawk, but if all one needs is a breaching tool, these should do great and needless to say i wouldn't want to get hit by either.

aleyn is right on the money. I'd add that edge geometry is critical on these if you're planning on any metal-on-metal contact.

S7 and 4140 are both used in jackhammer bits, if that tells you anything. If you had each of these set up with identical edge geometries I doubt you'd be able to tell a difference unless you had a few hours on your hands.

Where you will tell the difference is between 44 ounces of GG&G and 23 ounces of RMJ Shrike. The GG&G may be better for breaching heavier stuff since it has full tang of .40 S7. This is also where its heavier mass will shine. If you aren't breaching any heavy stuff, and just need a really tough tool in a light package the RMJ is it.

IMHO, the GG&G is what I'd want in my trunk, the RMJ is what I'd want in my pack.

RMJ Shrike.

no contest.

if you are going to carry 44 ounces of smash, carry something longer.

that's my opinion.

+1 gg&g is the .50 bmg shrike is the 7.62 both get the job done but which would you want to carry all day?

Like we all say "IMHO", the RMJ is more of a fighter/weapon. The GG&G will make a great tool, god speed to all.

My friend has a battle hawk and it really way too heavy to be practical. Hard to carry and causes me to overextend- I was just playing around with it and accidently stabbed my shoulder with the spike! Great construction though.

The RMJ or VTAC are much more practical, although the S7 is bragging rights status.

i think they wanted the GG&G to be short for being inside cockpits or cramped vehicles.its definitely not for hiking around with.its a very specialized tool.

i own a shrike and love it.i've been pretty damn hard on it too.the only and i mean ONLY negative about the shrike is the pommel/sharpening unit that un-screws from the bottom will un-screw itself loose from the vibration of repeated blows, not that many actually and the sharpening rod inside cracked too from all the vibration.

i bought a rubber washer for the and put that at the bottom of the threading and it helped a little.

i just take the whole thing off since its asking to get lost and the sharpener doesnt work for crap anyways.

all in all this is a minor thing to me and the shrike still does what it was really meant to do and does it well and reliably.

the 4140 is damn tough too.

i'm pretty sure dave brown of BUYBROWN SHEATHS is doing the sheaths for both which is a good thing imo
