So I can get either the Satin assisted Bowie, or a black blade manual Bowie.

What would you chose? I don't mind assisted but don't want any complications with state laws in New Mexico. However, I don't care much for black blades.

So get the satin finish. I personally think uncoated blades look and cut better than black ones. I only buy black if I have no other choice.

If Walmart sells assisted opening knives, would that mean that they aren't legal in my state? I only ask because I wouldn't think they sold illegal stuff..

I like unassisted knives. Less to go wrong which always seems to happen when you need it most.

I don't think assisted knives are usually illegal. I'd have to look at the laws for NM, and you might just talk to a LEO to make sure.

Just called the local police dept and she said unless your intent is to use it in a crime or you are suspected to use it in one, then it's a crime..

But assisted openers aren't in the switchblade category.

Yeah, assisted openers are fine pretty much anywhere. (At least by the letter of the law...obviously in someplace like NYC, the ridiculous way in which the law is "enforced" bears almost no resemblance to the actual law on the books.)

I love Darrel's assisted openers -- IMHO they're the best AOs on the market -- and uncoated blades, so satin/assisted gets my vote.

Okay, I'll cancel the black blade version and get the satin auto :) once they become available.

i prefer full auto .... but im also military so their arent any legal issues for me BUT on the side your looking at .. go spring assist the are legal in all 50 states

Last question, is it worth getting this m390 version or wait for the blade forums version?

This is one of those instances where I think "get both" is the only acceptable answer. ;)

If you can only get one for reasons such as finances or your wife/girlfriend/whatever never speaking to you again if you get both, it really just depends on which features matter most to you and whether they're worth the higher cost of the forum-designed knife (which is shaping up to have S90V as the blade steel). In my case, the Torpedo is my favorite Gunhammer blade shape -- spearpoints are my favorite blade shape more generally -- and since the M390 KC exclusive only comes in the Bowie blade, it was easier for me to pass up even though I'm a huge fan of M390.

When is the forum knife coming? Maybe if I can split up the purchases?
Not sure. The configuration, aside from the placement of the blade markings, should be finalized by Monday when the blade steel and handle color polls close. After that, Hark and/or I will get in touch with Darrel about how he wants to proceed with the orders, whether he wants us to approach Spark about putting a link at the top of the forum as he did with the traditional forum knife this past year, and so forth. The turnaround will likely depend quite a bit on how big the run ends up being; it's easier to fit 25 knives in to a production schedule than, say, 100 or 200. I'd put it at a couple months at the very least, and that's assuming the number of orders is on the low end of the range just mentioned.

Will this need to be a full payment up front or a preorder amount or a "I'll take it" thing?

The M390 one is pretty darn cool though. I don't think you'll be unhappy with one, unless you're really into the handle color and stonewashed finish of the forum knife. It's also gonna be something like 100 dollars cheaper. But I'm definitely getting the forum knife. No question about that.

Hasn't been decided yet. If the estimated turnaround is very short, full payment up front might make sense. Otherwise, my guess is that there'll still need to be some sort of partial payment up front, credit card on file to charge the balance to when the knife is finished, or something else of that nature. Given that we're commissioning a limited run of made-to-spec HTM Gunhammers, it wouldn't be fair to Darrel if he had to bear all of the risk and deal with people backing out on their commitments because they don't have any skin in the game.

I gotcha. So with a few months down the road timeline, I should be fine to get both :)

Thank you for all your help and sorry I went off my original topic a little.
