What media would you recommend? Will the blasting negatively impact the handles, both g10 and micarta? I want another project.

Anyone have any ghetto double cut they did themselves that they want to post?

180 grit aluminium oxide, follow up with glass beads, will look real good. Probably stay back on the handles though or removing them would be best.

This is how I've done them in the past.

Thanks man, i'm not really into pulling the handles as I like the factory fasterners and i'm not equipped to put new ones in, just hex heads.

Think maybe taping the handles would work ok?

BTW, post some pics! Trying to get motivation to blast 'em.

I used 100 grit aluminum oxide and 100-175 mil spec glass bead on my waki, it came out really nice. I taped up the handle, it didn't get damaged

Sure thing, the bead blast really brought out the temper line

my ASH was factory DC, then ghetto Satin, then was taken to a local shop who beadblasted it (with the handles attached and uncovered) for $20-25 (I forget the actual) and it was ready in less than 48hrs. and I like what happened to the G10...

That's what i'm going for. It'll be on a ghetto satin knife with no dimples or anything.

Hey DowntownDM, Nice ASH Blast Bro!!! Real smooth and well blended, good job...

Start with 180 grit A.O. @ 85 psi to cut the surface open.
Then slam the surface with small glass beads for a good, long time to seal it back up.

If you do a good job of taping the handles with good tape (like Gorilla tape). You should be ok.

I have done lots and lots of media blasting, and duct tape will hold up to brief shots especially if you are careful.

The media I used most was silicone carbide, and some pretty rough stuff. I wish I still worked there, because they had just about every type of blasting media you could hope for. Glass bead, very fine aluminum oxide etc.

Just use a nice first layer of gorilla tape, and get the lines right, then put another layer or two on.

Should not take more than a quick shot or two per side with each medium.

It is just like painting. Don't dwell on any spot.

I was going to say that if you are careful, and quick, and use a less aggressive media, you would be ok to hit the handles as well, it will just make them more grippy.

Some one already posted pics above.

Very nice looking ash too.

Oh, and the blast job on that Waki looks awesome!!!!! Did a great job of pulling out that hammon line.

The handles are fine un-taped if they are linen or G10 ...... my NMFBM is on it's second coating .... pic's are in the recent NMFBM thread .... I use the same medium as Grandsuave ..... doing it really blunts the edge though so use the knife a lot before doing it and get some mileage out of the edge if it is just sharpened ....
