I used the green chromium oxide available at Home Depot because that was available locally. And it either made no difference or actually made a blade duller. I finally ordered some diamond spray and waited for it to arrive and it was definitely worth the wait and expense. It will take a shaving Sharp edge and take it to the next level and fairly easyily, doing the same thing that previously dulled an edge. I bought 1 and half Micron spray since it wasn't too expensive and I was already paying for shipping. However 1 Micron is all you need to make a big difference. I suggest biting the bullet and ordering the real deal instead of trying to make something sub par work. I bought Hand American as it was the best deal and it is great stuff.

I haven't tried the Home Depot variety of the green compound. I've been using some 'Formax' green compound (6 oz. bar) that I picked up at a local Woodcraft store. I've been pretty happy with it thus far. I've read quite a lot here, that there's a lot of quality variation between makers/suppliers. Might be worth trying a couple other brands (although, now that you're acquainted with the diamond compounds, I'd imagine it might be hard to go back to anything else?). I haven't bitten the bullet on the diamond compounds yet, but I'm sure I'll give it a try eventually.

I have had good results using the same stuff that I also got at the Woodcraft store. I use it on my chisels and gouges as well as my knives. They sell diamond pastes in a variety of grits but I haven't tried them.
