well, im in a rock and a hard place. i carry a colt 1911, commerical blued of course. im hard on pistols and even though shes a fine gun shes starting to show her age. for what i do a parkerized pistol would be ideal. im a hard core colt 1911 guy, colts are all ive owned as far as 1911s go.

what i really want is a gi 1911 but with all the issues thats coming my way right now getting a gi 1911 for a carry gun is not feasable, i am in the process of selling some rims for a bmw e46 so ill have some cash available, not enough for what i want but enough for a copy of what i want.

whats a good reproduction of a ww2 1911 in the 400-500 range? is rock island or springfield armory better than any of the others?

Quite frankly the GI version of the 1911A1 is the not the way you want to go for a carry gun. bad sights, sharp corners that rip shirts and car seats up. and some other bits which leads one to the Improved versions.

For your money I think the best out there for carry is the Taurus version. Its still available around 500 bucks or so and it has great sights, a modest dehorning, and a good beavertail that really helps in holding the gun high for best recoil recovery.

Understand that a real GI level 1911, that is one from uncle sam, has gone to a price level that all of us who used to see GI surplus adds for 11 dollar Colts will make us cry.

One other possibility is the finding of an argentine Colt, try here;;;; http://www.cruffler.com/JLD.html

How old is your Colt, have you considered getting it refinished or hard chromed, I think i paid 150 or so to get a hi power hard chromed a few years ago, or electro less nickel for about the same money. If you have a pre series 70, maybe saving it for restoration might be a good idea, but if its a worker, why not get it refinished. Add night sights, and for 300 bucks you keep something you know and trust, but she looks great again.

Springfield GI hands down. Rock Island, High Standard, Armscorp etc. are a crap shoot and don't have near the quality parts or warranty as the Springfield. Recipe for a nice "clone":
Buy WWII Mil-Spec
Add GI small parts (hammer, trigger, slide stop, MSH and grips)
Shoot the heck out of it
Enjoy:thumbup:
Only option IMHO.
That or save some coin....a used fairly nice example of a WWII 1911A1 can be had for less than $1000. I've found a few.
*EDIT*
shoot me an email......I have a few questions and maybe some advice/help as well.

lol, ive been around the firearms game for a while, im aware of the advantages and dissavantages of gi vs modified. ive got about 1500 in to my current carry colt. ive stayed away from the cheaper "knock offs" until now my mottos been if it isent a colt its just a copy. ive got alittle coinage to play with and id like to get a gi style 45 that i can beat around.

what do you guys think about buffing my current colt of its markings and having a engraver engrave usgi style markings and repark the whole deal? i could have the best of both worlds there

In a word- NO!
The Colt purist in me cringes at even the thought. I'd not do that to an 80 series, much less an earlier one. With that said, there are a few folks that supply GI spec slides that would fit the bill on that (Caspian, McCormick, Les Baer etc) Not a bad idea really.

leave your colt be, and look into a springfield gi.45 or milspec. affordable and dependable.

last weekend i looked at a buds grandpas 1911, the one he packed in WW1, its a US stamped 1911, not a 1911A1 but a 1911 w/the flat mainspring housing/etc, its in probably 90% (or better) condition, my bud still occasionally fires it and its his home protection pistol, i told him he outta get a new one and put that thing up, i would wager its really worth some $$ now.
